If you're running the Raptors, and the results of this deal are that you end up with Herro/Trent/OG/Barnes/Siakam/Poeltl, while Miami has Dame/Butler/Martin/Robinson/Young/Love/Bam, are you happy with that result?
I guess not. Especially if Grady Dick turns out to be as good as Herro. But I will say Toronto matches up pretty well. Schroder or Herro vs Dame OG vs Butler Barnes vs Martin Siakam vs Robinson (or Love) Poeltl vs Bam
I'm fine with the Blazers getting little or almost no value back in a Dame trade in terms of players - but then they need some great picks. Miami unprotected picks in 2028 2030 and swaps in 2027 2029 could be a massive haul. Other teams have even better pick packages they can send. Thats the direction I would go and take back whatever junk salaries we can for our next rebuilding years as well for even more picks. But the players you mention here are so irrelevant to the Blazers next season or for a future core many years from now. If the Blazers get these types of mediocre backups back in a trade they need tons of picks - at which point the return is about the picks not the players.
Why is Barnes off limits? He had a bad sophmore year and was maybe the ~5th best Raptor after Siakam/OG/FVV/Poetl. It wasn't a great team either, they had an allnba allstar in Siakam and those other guys but were still in the lottery for a weak eastern conference. Not saying Barnes is for certain available - but a trio of Siakam/OG/Dame with some role players would seem to be a much more realistic chance to contend than the status quo up in the North.
This will be interesting to see what happens. If Dame really wants to leave ASAP then he expands the list IMO. Also the next question if there is no trade is Dame and or the Blazers wanting him to play or does he stay at home for a trade?
Why do you think this? While Joe has primarily done moves the last 2 years that are the complete opposite of what Dame wants or that fit Dame's timeline I'd say Joe either tried to push Dame to request a trade or at the least is totally fine with it turning into this situation. If Joe really wanted to keep Dame he trades picks for vets, or at least doesn't ship quality vets such as Hart out. Joe's moves don't make any sense if he was truly committed to winning with Dame long term in Portland.
Did he have a bad year? Or did the team have a bad year? I doubt Uriji is going to move him. They seem to love the kid. Although I think playing him at PG would be a mistake. https://www.sportingnews.com/ca/nba...est-passing-forwards/ot96tvgufimllauk8lbxuwnd
For some unknown reason, when I saw the name Victor, my mind went straight to Victor Khryapa. Don't ask. I don't know.
This is the hope, and if not by camp, then by the deadline almost for sure. If Dame sticks to his guns past the deadline that could be bad. I do however, think it's worth the wait as I can't see Miami waiting until the deadline to acquire Dame, they would be way out of contention after gutting their rotation. At that point I have to think Dame expands his list, quite possibly to Brooklyn which is our ideal trade partner. I actually love Houston and Utah's assets as well and Houston may actually be interested given the moves they made to acquire veterans in the off-season. If we could get two of Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith, Alperen Segun, and Eason plus say 1-2 picks I'd be ecstatic and I think an argument can be made that this would be a good trade for Houston if they want to accelerate their timeline. Obviously Utah has 5,000,000 picks, Dame played there in college and it's the anti-Miami lol, so I like the idea of returning Goodwin's favor by sending Dame there.
Houston just gave $80M to Fred Van Vleet. They're not going to send out valuable young assets to pair him with Dame.
There could be a few teams like Houston who become possible to offer up Dame trades in December. Lets say FVV is disappointing but the rest of their team looks very good and they're a darkhorse playoff team. Maybe they ship a bunch of their young talent plus some picks to Portland for Dame and we eat FVV contract. Not saying that exact example is likely, but there's probably 5-10 teams that are in this boat of could become Dame trade teams by December. It might be unlikely any single one of them makes a big offer, but in total its very likely one or two of those teams situation changes as well as more players being trade eligible in December increases the Dame offers. Ideally I'd prefer to get a Dame trade completed prior to training camp. But if the returns are all shit then Joe definitely needs to hold firm and see what is available a few months later. A poor return available today will certainly be there in December, so there isn't much downside to waiting with that hypothetical. There might be a much better return available in December though.
Oh, the poor Heat. Getting held up by that awful bad Blazers GM from their righteous attempt to get a top-75 NBA player for crumbs. Just terrible.
Joe is showing Dame how much/little Miami loves him. Joe knows Miami as currently constructed is not a contender. Joe knows their best player is older than Dame. Why should he fix their problem at our expense? We're rebuilding, we have time to be patient, they do not.
