Looks like Portland will be receiving a WNBA expansion franchise along with the Bay Area. It would be cool if they retained the Portland Fire name. https://www.thenexthoops.com/features/sources-portland-expected-to-be-second-wnba-expansion-team/
I was hoping new Bay Area team would play in arena in Oakland but I guess more money can be made from arena in San Francisco.
I will definitely check out a few games and would be shocked if the WNBA does not succeed in Portland.
Well the WNBA playoffs either just ended or are about to end so I think the games are played mostly during the off-season of the NBA
Man. I'm totally out of the loop on this? Couldn't tell you one name of a player. Maybe if Portland gets a team I will look into it?
So far the WNBA has only announced the Golden State team being added. A second team is expected to be added soon with Portland at the top of the list. No timeline has been announced for the 2nd team being announced. https://theathletic.com/4933817/2023/10/05/portland-wnba-expansion-team/
Highkin said he thinks it would start in 2025. Clark technically has one more year of eligibility after this season so in theory she could be there when Portland drafts. But she hasn’t said if she’s gonna go out for the draft after this season. https://www.deseret.com/2023/10/4/23903438/wnba-expansion-affects-caitlin-clark-iowa
Just a guess. It's the most obvious. Maybe Red Roses but the english women's rugby team has taken that. They could reuse the original Fire but no connection to the city.
