How long of a leash should Chauncey have?

?

What should we do with Chauncey?

  1. Fire him - even young players deserve a good coach

Chauncey's kind of gotten away with sucking for his entire Blazers career for various excuses. Now the excuse is "it's almost better if we suck because we still need to add high lottery picks". Does that mean he should be safe this season come-what-may?

I give him till Christmas to show he can coach. So far he doesn't have much of a playbook and keeps talking about his guys just being basketball players...as if we don't know that. He hasn't coached a winning endgame going on his third season so we'll see if he has winning ways. I'm honestly disappointed in him. I don't think they fire him but I probably would. I don't think he's putting "an address" on guys who aren't looking sharp so far. Last thing these young guys need is somebody just rolling the ball out there and playing pickup ball in the pros. We don't have an identity or a set starting lineup yet. When I try to imagine what Chauncey's style is I only think, zone defense.

The worse the better record wise

BUT i want to see growth from Scoot/Sharpe, that's all that matters, it's his job to put these two in the best possible position to succeed

Marang said that Chauncey is really focusing on teaching the basics with this young team and taking as long as necessary to make sure they get it. We need that kind of mentality. We don’t want a coach like Dunleavy who wouldn’t play his young guys. So I’m content to ride it out this year. See how we feel at the end of the season.

    None of the above, IMO.

Don't make change for the sake of change. Go find the best person and staff to most effectively develop these players. Once you find them, bring them in.

If that's this season, fine. Next season? Fine. We should have the best available staff tabbed by then.

Chauncey is irrelevant unless he gets incredible results (player and team growth). If he doesn't he shouldn't last through next season.

it depends on what the goal is, if its another season of tanking for a top pick, then obviously we need to lose a lot of games

if were done with tanking, then obviously both players and the team need to show an improvement from season to season (like okc did, they will likely be a playoff team this season)

its crucial that we have a right head coach for young players so they can develop and reach their potential, because were talking about this franchise future and we cannot fuck up with scoot & shae first and foremost, but also other young players

scoot & shae should be priorities, but mostly im afraid about shae, we need that kid to develop killer instinct, we need him to be aggressive and im thinking ant, grant & ayton might get in his way, because all of them want to shoot the ball

I'm done with tanking whether they are or not. Another tanking season and they'll lose my interest. I can't cheer for a team that loses on purpose.

we don't need to "intentionally" tank as the losses will come with this young inexperienced group, but we need to lose the "right way" which means learning and getting better as the season progresses. What we need to focus on is coaching that leads to player and team improvement, and that comes through a coach and staff that understands how to teach and develop young guys and the right system to do that with. Some coaches do very well with a vet/winning team but would not do well with a young, developing but losing team - they don't have the patience. I have significant doubts on Chauncy's ability to develop this young team and employing the right "system" to do it with - he seems very off the wall and haphazard to me, we will see

Chauncey needs to coach to win even if we don't get the win. He needs to have confidence in his players so they have confidence in themselves.

Sure, but coaching to win would technically be putting out all your vets.

So the starters would be Brogdon/Simons/Thybulle/Grant/Ayton.

Scoot and Sharpe would be coming off the bench with Jabari.

reporters are already getting on Billups nerves after 1 pre-season loss. It's gonna be a long year of excuses why Coach Billups can't coach the Blazers properly.

I saw glimpses last year early when we went on that hot start, of a strong defensive team. Quickly phased out.

But I really think that was more of a roster problem.

2 years is enough to know that Chauncy is not a good coach.

Here's how I rank the past Blazer coaches that I've watched:
    1. J Ramsey (1 championship, top 10 nba coach)
    2. R Adelman (2 nba finals)
    3. M Schuler (1986-87 coach of the year)
    4. M Dunleavy (1998-99 coach of the year)
    5. T Stotts
    6. N McMillan
    7. PJ Carlesimo
    8. C Billups
    9. M Cheeks (although he is the best national anthem singer)

I'm not a fan of keeping a coach onboard just because it helps 'the tank'. This team should be looking to win. And yes, that may mean playing the vets a bit more. I'm okay with that since it builds a winning culture and makes the young player elevate their game to earn playing time.

Good list. I probably wouldn't have Schuler that high... But definitely ahead of Nate.

What did you like about Schuler?

Oh I guess I'm in big disagreement here, actually didnt realize at all people were so down about Chauncey's coaching.... I'm the one who voted "He's a good coach! Prove he isnt!", but I mean you guys have seen him coach way more games than me, dont think I'm trying to say I know better..

I'm really much more interested in seeing this season upclose before I throw stones so I wanna give him the benefit of the doubt.

I think the roster is being constructed around what Chauncey would want to do.. So to me thats telling.. but I'm very much on some "lets see"..

Stylistically I like what Chauncey is doing here though... Its bully-ball.. Its anti-smallball..

The west is ABSURDLY difficult to maneuver thru... 10 game win improvements are quite the feat if you ask me.. with a team as young as the Blazers just the direction and the momentum are important -- How competitive we are in losses, I wanna see stuff like this upclose.

Yeah, Dunleavy probably should be ranked over Schuler. Probably just a fondness for the team those years on my part.

Billups may be the luckiest coach in NBA history. In his first two seasons he was told by management to lose as many games as possible in the last month or two of the season. This year, management is once again hoping the team’s record is so lousy they get another high draft pick. I can’t think of another NBA coach who was ever expected (and very handsomely paid) to produce a losing team for three seasons in a row.
