I considered just making a post in the Around the NBA thread, but I think I might as well make a thread and see if it sticks. Feel free to drop any names as well. Everyone is going crazy about Chauncey. I don’t see a point to dropping him right in the middle of a losing season. Going into the summer though, I do really hope we look into bringing someone new. I am staunchly against going backwards and bringing in someone like Bud. Some doofus on Reddit really suggested Adelman, like…what? Vanderpools been a name for a long while, no traction, so ehh. Becky? I guess, but who knows if there is any ill will from the last time. I really want to bring in one of these younger guys. I don’t really know much about what goes into bringing in a new coach, and I’m not going to pretend that I do, but I’ll offer up some reasons for a personal favorite that I hope we explore: Jordi Hernandez. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id...dez-emergence-top-nba-head-coaching-candidate https://en.as.com/nba/jordi-fernandez-the-best-associate-head-coach-in-the-nba-n/?outputType=amp https://www.si.com/nba/kings/news/kings-jordi-fernandez-would-like-nba-head-coach Coaching Pedigree: - since last summer, he has been serving as the head coach of team USA. Similar to how I’d like Batum back if we draft one or two French rookies with Rupert, I think it would be good for Shae to have someone who will eventually be coaching him when he plays for his home country. Team Canada, like France, just keeps getting deeper and deeper with talent - currently associate head coach for the Kings, last two seasons. We’re all aware of the turnaround Sac had last season. They are continuing that success in his year 2. - before that, he spend 5-6 seasons as an assistant coach for the Nuggets. Been there since Jokic’s sophomore season I believe. Who really knows if Jordi had any hand in the Nuggets’ success, but he’s shown to have a hand with two recently-successful franchises. - between ‘09-‘14, he worked between Cavs’ player development department and head coach of their GL team. So he was there for part of Lebron’s Cavs run. In Conclusion: I think he’s going to be a coach very soon. He was a finalist for the Suns job. If there are better candidates, pick them. But I’m hoping we at least take a look at him.
So he’ll be done with year 3/5 at the end of the season. Year 5 is a team option, so we would be letting him go a year earlier than he was going to be here for. Originally, I was fine with him finishing year 4 and deciding on year 5. But this point, if there’s a good candidate out there, I would want to pursue them. No point letting someone get away, if Jody can’t stomach paying a second coach for ONE season, I’d be sick asf.
Is he just a name? Lol. I don’t see any coaching history. Saw he was drafted by us in ‘02 though, so I’m left to assume he’d just be a familar face to older Blazers fans? Well I’m too young to know who he is, so he could be as raw at coaching as Chauncey, but he’s wasn’t as well known as a player? Yeah, I’m not jumping up and down about this lol.
Gonna have to be another rookie young and up and coming type guy. Just can’t see a real experienced coach wanting to come here?
I saw Adelman at Safeway about 5 years ago. He's definately retired, let the man enjoy it. Rick was optimizing which salad dressing will apply the best coverage for that evening. That's all the X's and O's he needs anymore.
He's not in the greatest of health and is definitely done coaching. HOWEVER..... I would take a serious look at his son, Nuggets Asst Coach David Adelman.
I like Adelman. He’s been Malone’s lead assistant going on 2 years and is kinda like our Jonah Herscu. Constantly pulling the head coach aside and bringing something to his attention
Hmm, I’ll have to look into him. Wow, if Adelman and Fernandez both land HC jobs this summer, Mike Malone will have the start of a mini coaching tree. Never really thought he’d be good enough to ever have one going back to his time in Sacramento lol. These are the names I like though. I imagine he’s probably an analytics guy, seems like all these younger coaches are. Definitely a family name that older Portland folk would get behind. Dudes like me who didn’t ever see Rick Adelman coach at least know the name while growing up in Portland.
Me neither. Donovan had an extensive career in college, but if he got hired this summer, I’d want ZERO parts of him.
So who’s our Giannis? Or are we now going to look like that Hawks team that won like 60 games and gets smacked off by a Lebron-tier player in the playoffs as a #1 seed? Bud is an old timer.
If he’s still loving in LO and wanted to come back as an assistant coach, I’d love to see him still be around the game. It’d give the FO an opportunity to find a young defensive guru HC.
In the time between when we fire Billups and hire a new coach, I hope we improve the roster and ownership considerably. Without those two things happening, we won't be a playoff team.
