Exactly. Phil leveled the playing field against the "blue blood" programs that spent lots of money for the last 100 years. But as we have seen with every top program, it is the coaches that bring in the recruits. Every program has dipped when they had the wrong coach.

Helf was a great example, he coached his team in the Championship game and yet still could not recruit effectively enough to keep his job. On the flip side, you had Erickson who had very little to work with but was effective while he was in Corvallis. It always comes down to coaching, which is why they get paid a ridiculous amount of money.

She has to sell within 10 years? Is that actually in a contract somewhere?

I think the NBA is starting to step in and there might be something they have said?

That would be nice... 10 years is a bit much... but it would be better than nothing.

"Stakes" is easy. But they're going to have to find some way to become billionaires before they can own a team outright.

I thought Lillard was on his way to becoming one?

Be careful what you wish for. A billionaire owner could be great, and could also suck. Some of these egotistical billionaires think they’re smarter than everybody else, especially if they’re in their mid 80s, they don’t care what they do, just to show their face in a series final, they have no problem mortgaging the entire future to get there. My hope is a billionaire owner that is younger and has a vision how to build a team properly through great trades and acquiring draft choices. as I’ve said, before, on this site, the Phoenix situation is an example of what worries me, they come in there and mortgage all their draft picks all the way to 2030, and if they don’t have a winner, they’re screwed but what do they care, they won’t be around. We will be stuck in a rebuild minus the future to get better. I can guarantee you when we get close to 2028, 2029, GM’s like Danny and the Oklahoma GM will be coming after Portlands draft picks that Cronin was so smart to acquire.

I always though that Dame, CJ, Melo and Lebron, Batum, Aldridge or possibly Popovich (who are all in the wine biz or are interested in it and 3 of them have vineyards here) should buy the Blazers. Pops hinted at retiring although none of this would happen until a long stretch from now. Sometimes an investment group is better than a solo rich guy owner.

ssshhhh! A gambler is going to gamble and a wine fanatic is going to consider being surrounded by it probably heaven. I don't drink so I'm a poor judge of the market these days

All of them together don't have close to enough money to buy the Blazers.

I think Lebron could probably do it by himself. He'd have to finance it but he's got quite an empire of investments. That's why you need minority investors...a lot of celebs own stock in sports franchises without being rich enough to own the whole team. TV comedian Bill Maher owned part of the Mets just for the box seats and parking spot, he sold his shares later beccause he didn't like attending board meetings.

Disagree on this. Read those names again and do a net worth analysis. They might have enough now and most certainly will have enough in ten years.

What are the Blazers said to be going for? 2.5B?

If all those guys pooled every single asset they have to buy a team, any guesses of their collective net worth? The internet says LaBron is worth 1B but who really knows? Mine is that they'd be short of that figure, but I'd also guess is that each of those guys would also like to keep some of their houses, girlfriends, boats etc... probably have to partner up some more. Hey KD!

So who gets to head this collective and how happy will the passengers be just riding?

The key word on this is "Stakes". They need someone to help no question and then there is the 10 year part. Of course all of that is relative because what will the team be worth in 10 years?
Lebron being 1 Billion is what is said on the internet with a casual search but I would guess it's higher due to the sheer enormity of his endorsements. Jordan is worth 3 billion with his investments into ownership so I'm assuming Lebron could come up with some support. We all know Lillard is a shrewd businessman. He's already bought a couple things in the area. He also has his endorsement money.
CJ is the president of the players union but actually the real power is the executive director who is Andre Iguodala. CJ seems to be the weak link but maybe has just enough juice to be involved?
The next name mentioned is Carmelo Anthony. Another pretty good business mind though he has only about a quarter billion net worth.

I agree there is probably no way they can do this without help but I would not be surprised one bit if this group came up with a strong ownership group beings they have ties to both to so many avenues.
    Just my opinion.

That might be what Knight offered, but most teams are going for over 3B now, so they would have to pony up a lot more.

Remember when people were annoyed Jody wouldn't sell the team for a third of this? Seems like she did the right thing not accepting a lowball offer.

Or maybe she's not selling because she's changing her DNA in order to break the trust and keep the teams for herself?
