If the team is sold and moved, it was written in that whatever money the city puts into improvements in the Moda, the new owners have to pay back 100% of whatever the city invested. Sure sounds like the Seattle situation.
I think the NBA has been pretty clear since the backlash after the Seattle move that they have no interest in moving historic franchises/any franchises from their current fan base. I'm assuming that the language in this deal has the city taking all of the profits they get from the Moda Center and re-investing them in both continued upkeep and future renovation of the arena probably along with investments into infrastructure and buildings for better businesses to lease in the surrounding area... since the city got the arena for a dollar. I don't think this puts us in any more peril of losing our team, in fact I'm assuming that it actually means considering that the Paul Allen Trust just basically gifted the city the arena that there is language to keep the lease prices favorable for the foreseeable future. I guess we'll wait and find out but I find the situation actually less precarious today with a five year lease in place than it was yesterday when there was no lease agreement on the land.
I think we should move the team to Hillsboro. Maybe they can use that stupid new baseball stadium that the MLB is extorting out of us.
Wait wut? If you're talking about MLB2PDX that's would be in Beaverton If you're talking about the Hops new stadium (still waiting for the final monies and we will know by March 15th) that would be because we moved up in affiliation to the Diamondbacks, and thus MLB has standards they need to abide by. They've given us 2 years. Technically 3 but the building will start as soon as funds happen. I'm excited for it if it happens.
What would really be messed up is Jody sells the team, the new owner gets a free renovation on us, then after the 5 years, renegotiates and is reinstalled as the owner of the arena.
You mean to tell me the local gubberment allocated money for stupid things? poppycock! we need more bike lanes!
diamond project is a hoax. They just wanted a creative way to sell bumper stickers, coffee mugs and other swag.
It's still minor league baseball. I have seen several different teams come through over the years. What's wrong with the stadium they just built not that long ago?
What a royal screwing. If the city knew how to negotiate they could have gotten the price down to 70 cents. barfo
