The point of the rule is to save the feelings of the losing team. But no one in "reality" goes "Oh man, we lost by 50 points, I'm going to go home and light my cat on fire." Or tries to explain to a judge "If only I hadn't been demolished 15 years ago while playing high school football, I wouldn't be robbing banks."Losing builds character. Not only that, but getting absolutely demolished builds character. It's good to experience failiure as a kid growing up. I realize most of you are still in high school, but it's good to suffer a beating once in a while. It helps you mature as a person. When you get beat, and beat bad, you work 10 times harder the next week in practice so that it doesn't happen again.

What's that team supposed to tell all it's backups when the 1st string runs the score up to 49-0 in the first half? Go out there, play hard, but don't score?

Their other two options (aside from just letting them play the game) was to have a Mercy rule, like you said, or to have a "running clock" like in soccer to hurry up the end of the game.Both the Mercy Rule, and Running Clock were turned down because "It would be unfair to shorten the amount of playing time that the backups get."
