I don’t mind low scoring just as long as it’s competitive. I would like to see more physical defense played in the NBA.

Raptors tiptoed underneath the Grizzlies in the standings after getting splattered by the Pistons. Wizards now officially claim the worst record in NBA. The tank wars are heating up.

Peter Vescey has clearly never played "in the playground." Dudes handcheck on literally every single drive.

Also never understood why anyone still listens to Vescey, but to each their own, I guess...

Blocks don't really help much unless your team is able to recover it.

It seemed like Whiteside's blocks tended to go back to the other team, who turned the broken play into an easy 2.

Rebounding is far more helpful than blocking.

I want players to play for the block-out rather than the block.

IDK about that? Rebounding is very important but a monster in the paint protecting the rim creates a whole bunch of problems and alters shots so there are more rebounds available.
Wemby has had games with 5,6,7 blocks and nobody is telling him to go block out instead of block shots.

Is he directing those blocks to teammates and corralling them himself, or are his blocks being gathered by the other team?

Also, Wemby being an average of a foot taller and heaving an extra 2ft wing span than everyone else makes a difference. He's automatically going to take the possession on a larger majority of blocks than almost any sub 7 footer would.

Whiteside needed to focus on being a more active defender and rebounder. Wemby doesn't have that problem.

Again IDK but that seems like a reach? Not sure many people actually direct a block to a teammate? Certain it’s happened. Blocks usually end up out of bounds or a broken 50/50 play.
Bottom line he protected the rim which is the job of the man in the middle. Not just that he probably covered someone who got beat.

Exactly. It's very hard to track. Playing solid position defense and boxing out will gain the vast majority of players more possessions than going for blocks.

This may not be true of Wemby (I simply haven't watched him enough). Or he may be able to do it all.

Theo Ratliff, for example, was great at playing great D, rebounding (actually I just checked, and he wasn't a very good rebounder), but he was great at collecting his own blocks (and when he couldn't, he was good at directing the block to a teammate).

Whiteside? Not so good at any of it besides just getting the block.

This has the potential to be worse than his first pitch.
