I would guess that Brooks has the potential for a head coaching job, and Brollups probably has an option for a head coaching job in the college ranks.

In theory, I think Brooks with his head coach experience was a good assistant for Chauncey. But at this point, what they need are assistant coaches who excel at developing young players. Was Brooks good at that? I have no idea.

    get more rookie assistants.

inexperienced coaching staff + a team full of rookies/sophmores = ping pong contenders for multiple years

Brooks coached the rebuilding Thunder after OKC stole the Supersonics.

Results?? Instant competitive playoff squad after only 1 year of tanking in Oklahoma.

Brooks development of young players is geared towards winning basketball.

Blazers need super rookies, not W's

I'm not a Billups fan but that is an extremely weird and fucked up move. The head coach picks his coaching staff, not the franchise. If the GM has taken away Billups' ability to choose his staff that is a huge insult and no-confidence vote.

I just got a feeling that Chauncey resigns.

how about job security for Chauncey?

Getting rid of Scott Brooks, a former successful head coach with a career +.500 record (including playoffs).. there's no alternative but to stick with Billups.

Blazer fans that want a head coaching change just got dunked on.

    new ammo for the podcasts:
    > What is Portland supposed to do?
    > Billups is the only coach that can perform head coaching duties.

I agree the team going young give both Joe & Chauncey job security for another 3/4 years.
But Chauncey could elect to resign?

I think that's what it would suggest as well as bringing in assistants who can compete for the next coaching job once Billups is let go.

Disagreed. They let the assistants go to get prospects for the next coach. This is good for fans who want Chauncey gone. This is likely his last season unless he's able to show some miraculous success this season.

i can only go by what the GM says. Cronin is boss, and he said everyone is happy.

I'd bet the over on Jody/Cronin picking up Billups team option summer of '25.

Blazers might need one of those amazing rookies in the 2026 draft, and Billups has no problem benching hot hands in the middle of close games, to install a player that is having an off night. Billups has sneaky bad coaching skills. I've never seen anything like it.

Cronin says i need a ping pong ball, and I've seen Billups shufflling players in & out to mess up whatever success the team might be having on that night.

Not so much throwing games this year. Portland had already lost enough for a top pick. Benching the starters not named Ayton did the trick.

But that tank for Scoot was brutal.
Billups benched Shaedon in the 4th a couple times. Sharpe was playing too well, and kept the score close.

Cronin hired several G-League guys at the end of 2023 who played hard. Billups was benching them immediately if they hit shots. Billups ran the offense through 20% shooter John Butler. Coach even told the reporters after an ugly tank loss, "mmhmm, yaa.. you know.. Butler is one of our better shooters". Cronin's team reporters nodded their head in approval.

Watford got fired up in a Spurs game, and helped the Blazers take a lead. Trendon's reward for inspired play was Coach Billups benching him for the 4th.
