Agreed. Coaching college students is different than coaching men, and even then, I’m always going to bring up the age because it actually is a point of contention. An old timer who’s spent his whole life being able to coach college players like college players, I have no idea how he’d be able to adapt to coaching grown men that way. I’d have better reason to look into Callipari, and he was a bad coach at the pro level too.
I agree the need to let him go isn’t immediate. This was more of “if the right candidate came along”, and I thought Jordi’s name was enough of an exciting name (to me, at least) to actually think about it.
I think ownership/Vulcans will have ultimate say on the coaching outcome because they're the ones who have to cut the check and prove support I think Billups was under-qualified for the job due to a lack of experience and clear strength he brought to the table. I would prefer someone with proven success and/or a unique skill that they brought to the table. I don't have realistic names in mind given the current ownership and roster make up that I think would be good hires and would be willing to come to Portland. I don't think your theory was any more or less baseless than mine. I think Udoka's hiring is unique because he was willing to come on at a discount because of what happened with him off the court in Boston. Nurse/Vogel went to teams with vets who can win (we don't have that). Monty took the Detroit job because of money, something I don't see ownership giving up. I think we agree obtaining a proven coach is unlikely under the current setup, which is my concern. I did give a few reasons for why I think we'd have a hard time finding a proven coach, but I'm happy to say it again. Ownership being new, unproven, no resume of willing to spend for a winner could very much be a turnoff. The roster itself is fairly weak, offering minimal upside. A top assistant may want to wait until a good opening (see Darvin Ham waiting for the Lakers job) as to not crash in burn and never get another attempt. Cronin has yet to show he's got a deep roladex of quality coaches that believe in his ability and vision to build a winner with them. I think Olshey wasn't loved by many either and was beholden to only hiring within his agents clients. I'm not sure if Cronin has the resume or backbone to not play the game to go get the best guy.
I think this was a joke, but if you could get a coach who had a way of using ML-AI to analyze the first half of a game and make recommendations for the second half I think it would be amazing.
Jim Moran should be considered. I like his enthusiasm and ability to motivate and inspire players. He's as ready as any of the younger dudes out there.
ChatHCP for coach! Me: When did Copernicus say the sun was the center of the universe? ChatHCP: I don’t even know who that is FAMS Me: Are CPU fans usually intake or exhaust? ChatHCP: Haha, NERD!
I'm not going to peruse new head coaches. Billups is locked into this franchise until Cronin gets replaced. With Joe doing "such a wonderful job", (last place Western Conference, viewership numbers plummeting, and using hit men in the media to attack Blazer fans) then Chauncey has already exceeded all expectations.
officially 2 years, with 2nd season a "team option". The basketball is quite often soo bad in Portland, i believe Cronin & Jody plan to kidnap Billups. His team option might get turned into a 4 year deal.
