Thanks for the memories Jerry (the original "Mr Clutch!), grew up on SoCal watching him and Elgin RIP!
From The Athletic: “Jerry West, the Hall of Fame player and legendary executive whose silhouette became the inspiration for the NBA’s logo, died Wednesday at the age of 86, the LA Clippers said. West spent his 14-year NBA playing career with the Los Angeles Lakers, scoring 25,192 points — a number that trails only Kobe Bryant for the most in team history. He made the All-Star Game every season of his career, won NBA Finals MVP in 1969 and captured a championship in 1972.”
That Jerry West, Gail Goodrich backcourt was killer. Of course, it didn’t hurt that they had Wilt in the middle.
RIP....I believe if they had a 3 pt shot in his day he would have had a ton more pts in his career...he shot a ton of shots from deep that were at the time only worth 2 pts....great shooter
Incredible shooter with lightening quick release, very good defender as well. An all-star every year in the League.
I am old enough to have watched him play at Memorial Coliseum. I was in awe of him......as were many of the players. (ie. Geoff Petrie)
The man still ranks in my all time Top 5 and likely always will. I hate the Lakers from the bottom of my heart and always have. But Jerry was NBA first and Laker last. Just an outstanding player and human being. I actually got to shake his hand and get his autograph in the early '70's. He was exceedingly gracious considering it was 6:30 am. Wish I still had that autograph......
