I don't care about Ruhwedel, they didn't give up sh*t to get him, it is what he represents, a totally useless move by Drury, which is all he has done since the trade DL and today. That is the point, he has done nothing to improve this team. Adding second rate guys like Ruhwedel, Wennberg, Roslovic (in a panic), Smith (in a panic) is crap, all crap. They add nothing to improve the team. That is the point. We will see what this team looks like in April, but Drury has added crap since this past April, so we'll see if he does more.
I am so confused, you complain every single trade DL about the prices and dealing picks and prospects, now you are saying wait until the trade DL, that makes no sense. I will be bumping this thread at the trade DL when you complain about what teams are trading for rentals as usual.
I am sorry for getting fired up, but I don't understand how people are okay with Drury doing nothing today, after doing just about nothing to improve the team at the trade DL, it is very puzzling to me. And there were a lot of reasonable deals we could have gotten signed today, and that's before factoring in the Trouba mess as well.
New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba is shocked to see his name in trade rumors this offseason, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. Rangers general manager Chris Drury reportedly asked Trouba earlier this week to submit the 15 teams on his no-trade list. Trouba's full no-move clause turns into a modified clause Monday, but the rugged defenseman may not be inclined to help a trade materialize, sources told The Athletic's Peter Baugh. Reports over draft weekend indicated the Detroit Red Wings are interested in acquiring Trouba, a Michigan native. Trouba has two seasons remaining on his contract at a cap hit of $8 million. He signed a seven-year deal with the Rangers in 2019 after asking to be traded from the Winnipeg Jets. New York named him captain in August 2022. Although Trouba is the Rangers captain, the team has shown interest in trading him. However, Seravalli says if a trade isn’t made, New York may opt to waive Trouba allowing any other team to get him for nothing. “I’m real curious about Trouba. Today, right about now is waivers time. So, there was lots of speculation that Trouba might be a guy that ends up on waivers if they couldn’t get the no-trade list to cooperate. They did that with Barclay Goodrow. So much happening,” Seravalli said on Daily Faceoff’s Live Free Agency Special on July 1. If the Rangers waive Trouba, it would be a surprise as he is their captain and leader. But, New York has just over $8 million in cap space, according to CapFriendly, so if they do waive Trouba and a team claims him, they would get $8 million more in cap space.
They should trade Kakko for Ehlers+ and then move Chytil to RW and find a 3C, or keep Chytil as the 3C and find another RW. Sign Tarasenko and put Reilly Smith on the 3rd line with Ehlers and Chytil. Bump Cuylle down to the 4th line where he's probably better suited. It's alot of movement but it can be done. The only ? is where would Othmann slot in.
Signing big name free agents on July 1 historically has not exactly worked out well for this organization. Smith move is ok. Does not move the needle either way. Pizza boy will probably look for bigger trades to improve the team. Not really sure what he is doing though. Just be thankful he did not bring back Kane here or gave Stamkos his retirement contract
They may have to keep Trouba this year as there aren't many UFA's left, unless they have some sort of trade target in mind.
Trouba if they keep him is gonna lay people out this year. He’s gonna be pissed. The reality is that goaltending still wins in a regular season in the playoffs and a lot of these teams going out paying all these players don’t have it.
Here's the bottom line, right now the Rangers are worse than they were at the end of the season. Wennberg, Roslovic, Wheeler, Gustafsson, Goodrow, and a 2nd round pick in 2027 and a 5th round pick in 2025 are all gone. In return the Rangers added Carrick and Reilly Smith. We'll see what else Drury has in mind, but the team as is right now, is not close to being a legit threat. I agree signing Kane or Stamkos considering the contract he got, would have been the wrong moves. With that said there were many guys who signed very reasonable deals, and Drury did nothing of note to add value to the team. Smith is a whatever 3rd liner, and Carrick is an AHL player. I questioned if Drury had the ability to make the necessary moves to get the team over the hump, well considering the trade DL and today I think that question has been answered.
The idea that every free agent going to every other team is going to be fantastic and they would have come to NY for the same deal is fantasy land stuff. Totally agree with Strud's point about NY being more expensive, has kept stars from all professional sports away for decades. Why would any free agent sign here if Drury is running them out of town before their contracts expire? I don't think it's necessary to blow up the team, Lav was hired to take the Rangers to the Cup but he was outcoached by Maurice leading to poor player ice time management especially with Laf. I can see Tarasenko back which would be fine.
Gorton was in over his head, cost JD his job, worst drafting sense in professional sports absolutely killed the Rangers with his long shot flops,
Today was a missed opportunity for the Rangers. Its evident that Drury was anticipating being able to move on from Trouba and when that fell through he was left to make minor moves only. They could have had Marchessault at a reasonable cost for an immediate improvement and it didn't happen. There are no difference-making FAs available at this point. Im not interested in bringing Tarasenko back, he's not the threat he used to be. Skinner, who I wasn't interested in anyway, just signed with the Oilers on a 1yr/$3m deal. Maybe they look at a guy like Sprong on a short deal for middling money but he's hardly an ideal fit. Any chance they have at addressing their needs now is going to come from within the organization or through a trade. As for Trouba, I have not seen or heard anything about him or his character that would indicate he would be toxic or a locker room cancer. In fact, I would argue the opposite. He strikes me as a sincere, hard working, good guy who tries to take on more than he needs to, to his detriment. If his days as a Ranger are not over I would not be concerned with him being a negative influence on the team. However, it's hard to imagine a scenario that he stays with the team.
Teams aren’t built in July. Trades will need to be made to improve the team. Let’s see how all the youngsters look in camp.
Completely agree on Trouba. I find it hard to believe that he will still be on the team, but if he is I don't expect him to be a cancer or anything like that. Say whatever you want about him, he seems like a good leader and teammate. Based on all I have read, I do however think he has some bad or hurt feelings towards Drury, I think both things can very much be true. I don't think anyone is implying every FA would come to NY for the same amount they signed elsewhere, I am sure a lot wouldn't. I am also pretty confident that some would have, or at least come to NY for a similar amount, maybe a little more. That's water under the bridge now. I think a missed opportunity is a good way to put it, and I do think the Trouba situation complicated things. But all of that is on Drury honestly. He was caught in a tough spot with Trouba, not sure how you don't confirm he'd go to Detroit before going through the process to trade him there though. He panicked on trade DL day and added junk and settled for Roslovic last minute. I think the at best questionable Smith trade today was the same sort of panic move with no plan. We'll see if he can get anything done to improve a team that is now worse than the one that lost to Florida. And I think teams are built in July. They are added to in March/at the trade DL, but they are built in July. At this point I'd agree a trade is how he'll improve the team, if he plans on doing so.
In Brooks article tonight, now he is saying a Detroit trade as he reported, was not on the table. Trouba wants to stay in NY for at least another season due to his wife's residency, and he may not accept a trade even to a team not on his NT list (I don't understand that unless he retires). Taking it all in, sounds like Trouba will be back and it will be BAU for him next season.
Who knows, maybe if he stays healthy, which he wasn't down the stretch, he can at least be 50% better than he was and give them a good, likely final season.
