Most Valuable Player. It's a pretty easy call by the name of the award.

I also said it's that or split the award among three or four of the winners, but you conveniently left that out.

Calling a player on a team who lost 4 of 5 games "most valuable" raises the question--if his team didn't win, how much value was there, really?

Splitting the award among three or four players is a weak cop-out.

Given the series stats, I'd probably have given it to Tatum over Brown, but their overall contributions were close enough (with Brown having significantly better shooting percentages) that him receiving the nod was completely reasonable.

I happen to agree with you. No question Luka was the most valuable player to his team. Just because he didn’t have near the talent around him doesn’t erase that fact. Yes they lost in five but Luka kept them from getting blown out in four games.
I also happen to feel the award should be more available to co-winners.
Now there is plenty to be said for what both Brown and Tatum did. There is also plenty for Holiday to claim.
The team and players that win should get that credit.

it’s tough watching a player like Luka do so much and lose. Blazer fans are very used to it. Been watching it for 40+ years now.

They 100% wouldn't have been there without Luka, which you can't make a good case for with any single Celtic. I understand the reasons for not giving the award to a losing player, but this series was so extreme in that respect, it was well warranted.

That's the gist of my argument. Brown was no more deserving (and arguably less deserving) than several of his teammates. And I believe he won it purely on the basis of his mega-extension changing the perception of his value. A year ago, everyone knew Tatum's [bigger] extension was coming in a year, and no one that I can recall was talking about Brown as their best player.

But it's not a "playoff" MVP award--it's specifically the finals. And in the finals, specifically, Luka's "value" only contributed to one victory. How much he did to get them there is irrelevant.

You took the wording too literally and missed the overall point. Dallas is not remotely competitive without Luka. Boston is likely still the best team in the league without any one of their starters, including Brown.

I doubt there have been many Finals with such a disparity between teams in that regard, so precedent of the losing team hardly ever getting MVP isn't really relevant.

Stotts might actually get another head coaching gig after landing that role.

    Good for him.

Excellent!! No tanking for the Dubs. Playoffs? Maybe, as long as GSW doesn't knock the Lakers out. LeBron's #12 ball could easily jump in front of Portland.

Interesting piece I just read. Stotts has been offered the Lakers coaching position three times and has turned it down every time.

The source is Anthony Irwin in case anyone wanted to know.

So LBJ just signed his max, does that mean a trade is their only way to improve now?

You got half the equation. Cavs (LeBron) and Magic (Dwight) match the Mavs (Luka) dependency on one player, but the Spurs and Lakers don't quite match this years Celtics in terms of no one player standing out and every starter being equally deserving of MVP.
