So that everyone is clear, I have moved--and will continue to move--any posts about transgender Olympic competitors from the Olympics thread on the main page to the Transgender Issues thread in the OT page. Posts and responses thereto on this topic will not be about the Olympics so much as the political and philosophical discussion on transgender athletes in women's sport, and the moderation staff have agreed that it is better to have that polarizing discussion separated from the general commentary about the events transpiring in the current Olympiad.

    Thank you for your understanding.

That boxer is not transgender. She was born with a condition that makes her have elevated testosterone levels similar to a male's.

And yet a poster here concluded without evidence she is genetically male and should not be allowed to participate in women's sports.

She is not male. She is a female with a disorder that causes her to have xy chromosomes and testosterone levels indicative of a male. She is not transgendered. That isn't allowed in her country.

This is a tough situation for her, the other Olympic boxers, and the organization that decides eligibility. She is listed as female on her passport and birth certificate and they did a thorough examination. So, it's been determined she's a woman and they must let her compete. There is an outcry they are letting a man fight women.

She didn't ask for the disorder that gave her all this strength. She is a woman and she is trying to box as a woman. She is being called a man, is being trashed on social media, and has to deal with the price that will come with winning.

The other women competitors are at a disadvantage. The disorder gives Khelif a big edge. She has the power of a man in a woman's body. These other women are taking hits they haven't taken before in their careers. None of them will probably be able to beat her.

    It sucks all around.

It's not like they're even some unbeatable force.

Their record is 9 wins and 5 losses.

    She. Her.

No, she is not unbeatable. I'm not sure who she lost to.

"They" is a perfectly acceptable way of referring to someone. It's gender neutral.

Ah, the generation gap. Young folks do this all the time, even when it's obvious which one the person being referred to identifies as. I feel you @Chris Craig but we are the dinosaurs.

It's not a disorder, it's just being "intersexual." Contrary to the MAGA crowd, biological sex is not a simple binary, it's a spectrum. By all of the standards in place prior to the discovery of chromosomes, nobody would question that she is a she. It might be Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (Jamie Leigh Curtis is rumored to be an example of this) but there are plenty of others.

Would the MAGA crown feel happier if women's sports were divided again into "femme" and "butch"? Would that help to protect the sanctity of the thing they have now decided is super-important after ridiculing and fighting against it for decades?

I'm not sure anyone would refer to me as "young" anymore. 43 is pretty much well outside of young.

You're as young as you feel. Which makes me the oldest person who ever lived.

I believe medically it is classified as a disorder. DSD is a "Disorder of Sex Development". I'm not sure if she has been formally diagnosed though so that is just conjecture on my part.

So are a lot of things. Like autism. And so was homosexuality before Evelyn Hooker.

#1 The US president has no control over Olympic rules.

#2 This woman is not “transgender”. She was born a woman and has always identified as a woman since birth.

#3 Stop spreading hate towards transgender people merely because you are angry about the Olympic rules that allow a woman to compete as a woman, in a woman’s sport. Yes, a biological woman can have XY chromosomes due to certain genetic conditions. Stop being so ignorant and using this to attack trans people.

    Stop oversimplifying a complex situation.

I don’t know what the right move is here but ignorance and hate is not the solution.
