I didn't realize there were enough abandoned mines to cover world baseload like this... Coupled with wind and solar (and new battery tech, and geothermal), there is no reason we can't begin eliminating our dependence on fossil fuels almost immediately. And this is a couple years old... Amazon funding construction of 4 nuclear reactors on the Columbia River RICHLAND Wash. (KPTV) - Due to the growing demands of AI from major tech companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google energy resources are now strained more than ever in the U.S. As a result, Amazon announced on Monday that it has struck a deal with Energy Northwest and X-Energy and will be funding the construction of four new nuclear reactors on the Columbia River in Washington. “As a member of Washington’s business community, Amazon is committed to investing in new nuclear energy technologies that can help power our operations and provide net-new, safe sources of carbon-free energy to the grid,” said Kevin Miller, Amazon’s Vice President of Global Data Centers. “We’re proud to be working with Energy Northwest, a utility company that’s also thinking big about meeting society’s growing energy demands while addressing climate change. This new SMR project is a significant step toward Amazon’s Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon across our operations by 2040, and signifies our continued dedication to becoming a more sustainable company.” These new reactors were described as “next-generation” and “small modular reactors” in a news release. The reactors are set to be installed in Richland, Washington – near Hanford, the most contaminated nuclear site in the U.S. Washington state just approved a record $3 billion to spend on cleanup at the Hanford site this year.
I hear what you're saying. However, Amazon is only funding the first four so they have priority on the power that comes from those four. But there is room for eight more modules. I really don't have a problem with Amazon getting it started. I think it's a great step to at least prove out the SMR concept and help get the ball rolling. But I hear what you're saying. I wish government had this much foresight. This is the kind of thing we need them for.
