49ers | Team showing big interest in Brooks; but is he too costly?Thu, 22 Jun 2006 19:20:33 -0700Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan and vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan attended the workout of Virginia LB Ahmad Brooks Thursday, June 22. As previously noted, the 49ers are also scheduled to fly Brooks to Santa Clara July 28. He'll have a physical the next day. The 49ers will have the right to select anywhere from No. 1 to No. 11 in the supplemental draft. The 32 teams are divided into three groupings. The first 11 teams (teams with six or fewer victories) will have a lottery to determine which teams choose in which positions, 1 thru 11. If the 49ers use their first pick on Brooks, they would forfeit their first-round selection in the 2007 NFL draft. Some NFL insiders do not expect Brooks to last until the second round of the supplemental draft because he's just so darned talented. The expectation is that a good team with veteran leadership will take a chance on Brooks with its first-round pick. The 49ers probably will not go after Brooks because of the exorbitant price in addition to the baggage he would bring to the team. They probably don't want to sacrifice their first pick for next year (probably another top-10 pick) on a player of questionable character. No team will spend a 1st rounder on him lol. Hope the 49ers pick him up, hopefully with a 3rd but a 2nd is more realistic. Mike Singletary and Bryant Young will whip his ass straight.
To be honest, im kinda hoping our number goes before yours, so we can beat you to the punch in the second round. Him and Vilma in the middle of the field *drools*

Vilma was never able to 'roam free' last season since our DT's sucked and he definately didnt have any 'protection' because of it and he still shed off enough blockers for 169 tackles. He will fit in just fine....now hes just being asked to do more of what he had to do anyways last season.
If somehow the 49ers get Brooks, they'd have a pool of youngsters at LB's. Manny LawsonParalys HaralsonAhmad Brooks

No matter how good or bad the defensive tackles are, your middle linebacker has more freedom in a 4-3 defense and will play more sideline to sideline. He didn't rack up 169 tackles defending only the middle of the field, even if he did it more than the traditional 4-3 MLB

You are correct though, the 3-4 doesnt rely on the Linebackers to make as much tackles as it would in a 4-3, so I would expect his tackle number to decrease some, however, I would also expect his playmaking ability to increase in the 3-4 since he wont have to cover as much ground in the past so that when the ball does travel in his direction he will be better positioned to make a play on it.Not to mention the most important part though, is that the New York Jets DO NOT have a 3-4 Base Defense. We will play WHATEVER IT TAKES to win, if that is the 4-3, 3-4, 5-2, 4-4, 3-3-5, Jonathan Vilma may very well only be lined up playing in the 3-4 defense 4-5 snaps a game.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Clayton)</div><div class='quotemain'>Brooks' stock rising: Ahmad Brooks, the Virginia linebacker eligible for the July 13 supplemental draft, needs to make a good visit with the 49ers. The 49ers were the first team to schedule a visit after last Thursday's workout. Brooks improved his stock by running in the 4.6 range and getting his weight to 260 pounds, 32 fewer than his weight 10 weeks ago. The 49ers need an impact linebacker on the other side of Manny Lawson, but Brooks has more experience in the system, coming from Al Groh's 3-4 scheme at Virginia. The debate is whether the 49ers can steal him with a fifth-round pick or if they have to use a second-round pick.</div> Hope he slips to the third, but would not mind givin up a second for him
