UFCW Local 555 also represents diagnostic imaging techs (X-ray, Cat Scan, MRI, Ultrasound) for Kaiser Medical. When I was a kid my mom ran for and won an election becoming one of the union's vice presidents for 4 years.

My grandma worked in HR at Kaiser. My mom and 4 of her sisters and 2 of her sister-in-law’s retired from Kaiser. My brother and 3 of my cousins work there now.

    Kaiser is in my blood.

I’m a member but holy hell that outfit bugs me sometimes.

Back in the 50's, kids call Fred Meyer, Freddie Fall Aparts. Anyone remember that?

You can strike all you want, but the problem is that housing and the cost of living has massively outpaced wages and Fred Meyer will just pass the cost of increased wages to the consumer.... again.

Housing is the problem. It's the lynchpin. People used to be able to work jobs like Fred Meyer and still afford an apartment/food/car/etc.

I was driving through Beaverton over the weekend and they have a new apartment complex on Murray called West End. They are advertising a studio apartment for over $1900 a month. A STUDIO. IN BEAVERTON. FOR ALMOST $2k A MONTH!?!?!?! How do people afford that?!?!

As somebody who has been a part of two different unions that basically robbed me and my family of money, I'm strongly considering going out of my way to go to a Fred Meyer now.

Now don’t take me as one to trust giant corporations, but in trying to get the merger to go through Kroger is pledging to cut like $5b in consumer costs. Thing is I’m not sure it would look the same as some might think because if you took .03 off everything they sell it would add up. Probably a lot of grey area for that too, and not sure Kroger could be held liable in court if the merger is approved with agreement by Kroger to certain situations.

Having been both on both sides of the union/management equation I can see both sides of the story. And what always blows me away is how little members of both sides actually know about the actual details of their contracts, what each side can and can't do. At least half of all labor disputes governed by a contract could be avoided if those (management AND labor) affected by the contract actually took the time to read and understand it. And while union members can certainly be lazy and self entitled, most just want their jobs, benefits and workers rights protected. And unfortunately it is an extremely rare American company/corporation who makes a good faith effort to do that for their employees. Shareholders come first........probably part of that "Great America" thing.

That said, I have found unions to be just as lazy, corrupt and self serving as the companies/corporations whose employees they represent.....unions and management deserve each other in general.

And if I worked at Freddie's, I'd go on strike too. Maybe if they raise the wages they can hire competent checkers.....we no longer shop at Fred's because the checkers can (and do) rip you off if you are not paying attention. And at Freddies, the employee is always right if it comes down to an overcharge dispute. Disgusting.

I have GOT to hear Lars Larsons take on all this.

He’ll blame the greedy union members and consumers.
