Got our hostages out of Iran and built bridges with them. Made some great friends by arming the Mujahadeen. Eliminated all those greedy unions.

Ahh, yeah, the Reagan Years. We are feeling the win from those to this day.

My cousin is the chairman of the Republican Party in a neighboring county.

Once we were going back and forth about the merits of Trump and I threw this quote into the thread.

He didn't get it. This movie was big when he was in his early 30s, and it went right over his head. He corrected me and then someone else explained it to him.

It was at that moment I knew you couldn't have a sense of humor and be a member of the GOP.

I thought it was worthwhile to point out since you are always extolling the virtues of Scandinavian countries.

I understand you think it's a good point. My question is why? What problems are introduced by immigrants?

You should ask that question of the Scandinavian countries.

I get that, my points was even with all the faults we have as Nation we still have lots to offer those wanting to come here.

I know, but obviously an amount of context needed to be added. The biggest, in this case, being that the people coming here were doing so not so much by economic possibilities or having less government in their lives but by simply trying to, you know, actually live in what's become a largely lawless place.

To put it in even better context, El Salvador has the highest death rate in the world because of violent crime. Honduras is second.

No one else is even close.

Why? They aren't seeing any problems with immigration either.

I see no evidence that immigration is a problem, so why would I ask anyone about it?

We have more natural resources and cheaper shipping (via our vast naturally navigable river systems which covers more miles than the rest of the world combined) than any other country in the world. We have built-in benefits that no other country enjoys.

We could have a worse system than every other country in the world and we would still live better than most.

If immigration isn’t a problem then why do Scandinavian countries have stricter immigration policies?

After all it seems like you think the US should model its political system after theirs.

That seems to be a very big leap from what they were saying. I don't want to judge your motives but the read I got from what they were saying is so far off from what you are taking that I almost see your response as a deliberate mischaracterization.

In simpler terms perhaps, it's not an all-or-nothing scenario.

Actually I’m not making an argument for or against immigration. It’s more about why Scandinavians are considered happier people and how they’ve been able to enact the social programs they have.

To the best of my knowledge they generally have more strict immigration policies because of anti immigration rhetoric. But they have varying degrees of immigration policy.

I've been very consistent in that we should adopt policies that show benefits, regardless of where it's from. I've never once said that we should adopt all of anybody's policies.

If there is no evidence of any benefit due to their immigration policy then I wouldn't suggest that we adopt it. In general I don't support restrictions unless those restrictions are supported by hard evidence of a greater benefit.
