A lot of historians believe the term southpaw is because left handed pitchers faced south on the mound. Before night games were possible, ballparks were often oriented so that batters faced east to avoid the sun. This would have meant that a left-handed pitcher's arm would have been facing south when they pitched

    So what happens first?

MLB to PDX or the demise of MM?

I bet you a million dollars, MLB to PDX happens before the demise of MM.

I think his strategy is brilliant. If he loses, you won't be around to collect.

    Oracle faces east.

The issue is more that the view would likely be the Ross Island bridge.

It appears as tho Oracle park is sandwiched in a similar way that a park built in this location would be.

    Need to see their plans

Ok so its on the westside of the river just north of south waterfront. So where would the stadium actually fit at?

1 South of Ross Island Br - there is not much room between the ross island bridge and south waterfront buildings
2 Between Ross island and pedestrian bridge - not much room between these bridges either
3 Between pedestrian bridge and i5 bridge - Newer OHSU building there already

I guess they must be thinking of building on option 1 or 2 but those just seem like they will be very hard to fit a stadium in there.

Parking would be a disaster too, I guess they could try to fit a massive garage in the other side of the Ross island bridge. But they'll need some huge expansions of roads/bridges to get cars in and out of that location.
Maybe they could also build a massive parking garage over on the OMSI side then people walk across the pedestrian bridge.
I guess there is the commuter train that goes on that bridge too... might actually be much easier to get to the stadium from the east side than west side. If they could have a fleet of trains going every 3 minutes closes to game time maybe there is a way to make this work.

Having Dinner/Hotel/etc options right on site would be huge as people could go there well before the game plus it would help traffic. Thats always the problem with Blazer games and the Rose Garden, there just aren't many nice options right at the arena.

Best I can get for you at this point. I'll have more in a few days I'm sure. Zidell yards is the area where they used to build barges.

IMHO this is an absolute pipe dream. Just does not seem like something that would work well? Maybe there are plans to rebuild the Ross Island Bridge? I honestly have not seen that come across my desk yet?

What are the chances we could have a MM meet and greet this season?

Yeah, it would probably have to be area 2, and it'd be a tight squeeze, but it could probably work. @julius mentioned Oracle Park, and if you compare satellite views, there's enough space for a similar-sized facility, and then (as you suggested) a parking garage south of the RI bridge.

I agree that the access to that area at present would be a mess. Seems like the various access routes would all have to totally be redone. 5 North, 405 South, Ross Island Bridge (already long overdue)...and yeah, bringing people across from the east side of the river using the Tillikum would make a lot of sense.

I would then undermine you by building a boat-ride-sharing app. @KingSpeed would be my first hire.

I think one of the biggest issues would be parking, but if you look at Oracle, there isn't a lot of on-sight parking. And if the plot of land is both north and south of the RI bridge, they could utilize some of that space for a parking structure. But they'd need to REALLY work on infrastructure there. Maybe have a street car/max line swoop down behind the stadium to pick up and drop off people?

Maybe a new/redone exit off of I-5 there (how that would be done, I don't know...but I'm not an engineer). While the Red Tail area had a lot more space to do other things, it really wasn't practical (or, I should say, this new site is more practical).

Whether or not this puts the city closer to getting an MLB team is unknown, but at least it's more than "hey, we're interested in this land..here's some recycled drawings, and our latest hat design".

I think there is a street car line that runs along Moody down there on south waterfront. They'd definitely want to up the # of cars/frequency, but it at least gives 1 option. Unsure how new exits would look off of the 5, but with the exit to S. Waterfront/ross island, I'm sure an extension of that could be adjusted coming from the south? And then you have me and @PtldPlatypus ' competing water boat services...

Major League Baseball clearly states in rule 1.04 "THE PLAYING FIELD: It is desirable that the line from home base through the pitchers plate to second base shall run East Northeast." The location of the owner's boxes, prevailing wind directions, and a multitude of other reasons have caused rule 1.04 to be ignored by Major League baseball teams. Baseball Almanac is pleased to present a National League ballpark orientation chart designed to illustrate the actual layouts.

"Several rules of stadium building should be carved on every owner's forehead. Old, if properly refurbished, is always better than new. Smaller is better than bigger. Open is better than closed. Near beats far. Silent visual effects are better than loud ones. Eye pollution hurts attendance. Inside should look as good as outside. Dome stadiums are criminal." - Sportswriter Thomas Boswell in Baseball Digest (August 1979, Certain Ballparks Have Their Own Special Charm, Page 67)

And we need to keep in mind that this is the 3rd or 4th location they have put offers on that did not pan out. Do they need to have an offer in the works just to make MLB believe they are serious?
