I watched the recording last night

    * both teams botched some potential, momentum-changing big plays. That happens in every game though. Howard fumbling that snap on 3rd & 3 was huge. As good as Gabriel was, he did miss badly on at least 2, maybe 3, passes that would have been big gains.

    * lots of whining from OSU fans about the OPI on the last drive. That sure looked like textbook OPI to me, the main criteria being that the OSU receiver definitely extended his arms. The people whining are conveniently forgetting that official incompetence robbed Oregon of an interception that would have kept OSU from their first TD

    * this was about the worst game for Oregon to lose Jordan Burch. He may not be quite the pass-rusher that Thibideaux was, but he's damn good at it. More than that is he is big and physical and excellent at setting the edge. I think about half of OSU's rushing yards, including that 50 yarder, were to the gaps that Burch would have normally filled. And Howard wouldn't have had as much time in the pocket with Burch in there. With a healthy Burch I think Oregon wins by a lot more than a point. Tince, I sure hope you're wrong about the severity of Burch's injury

    * the whining about Lanning & the Ducks taking advantage of the rulebook is pretty funny. I really have to wonder if it was OSU using that rule to beat Oregon if the NCAA would have been as quick to react

this much have been a great experience for anybody attending that game. More-so for Duck fans than Buck fans

First quarter, Ducks intercepted the ball…..they didn’t even review, gave it back to OSU, they scored a touchdown. I got nothing more to say. 7 points that shouldn’t have counted for the Buckeyes.

With big games like this there are always two reactions, the one immediately after the game, and the one you come to a few days later after reading recaps, watching replays, and hearing from the people involved.

1st reaction: HOLY SHIT, WE WON! WE WON! WE WON!

2nd reaction: I've been so impressed with Lanning, he's great at recruiting and motivating but... after the two Washington loses last year I had big concerns about his Xs & Os. He got outcoached in those loses. The game against OSU, Lanning outcoached Day. Straight up. Our overall game plan and in individual situations we outcoached Chip and Day.

Lanning is learning and growing as a head coach.

And this makes me so happy.

Ironic that they're complaining about the 12 man penalty, while simultaneously ignoring that they quickly rushed to get a snap off so that the officials couldn't review the interception.

Cool idea actually, if it’s here in town. I’ll talk to Sly about that.

So now it sounds like the NCAA has looked at and now changed the rules after the 12 man incident.
Now if a team has 12 players the opposing team can choose to take the five yards or put the time back on the clock.
This is only the case unless the team with 12 men has one player trying to get off the field. In that case the other team doesn’t have the choice to replace the time.

I honestly believe that if it had been reversed and OSU did the 12 man thing that directly contributed to them winning the game, the NCAA wouldn't have addressed this until after the season was over.

for sure, if Cal or Oregon or ASU or Utah had been the 'victim', there would have been no rush to correct. But when a cash-cow-blue-blood gets gored, the NCAA calvary arrives with bugles blaring...after the massacre

I wish Lanning had justsaid it was inadvertent rather than being coy about it and implying it was a tactic

The cat was out of the bag regardless. Too many people were saying they thought he did it deliberately.

it was pretty clear. The Ducks saw the OSU alignment and called time-out. OSU came out after the TO with the same bunch formation of 3 receivers on the Oregon side of the field. So, leaking that 12th man from the sideline made him the 4th defender for 3 WR's (all of the best OSU WR's, IIRC), eliminating pick plays an an option. The flag couldn't be throw till the snap of the ball so the play had to proceed and the rule was the time off the clock counted

the Ducks gambled but it was a good gamble. If OSU would have completed the 8 yard pass, they would have to decline the penalty and there would have only been 3 or 4 seconds left and the FG would have been a 53 yard attempt

something else about the rule change:

    * if a defense jumps offside just before the snap, and the offense runs the 'free' play; for instance a long pass play that takes 8 seconds off the clock but is an incomplete pass. The offense will accept the penalty but the time is NOT put back on the clock

    * if there is a defensive pass interference on an incomplete pass that runs 6 or 7 seconds off the clock, the offense will take the penalty, but the time is NOT put back on the clock

the defense can have 17 players on the field as they change personnel. The rule is they can only have 11 when the play starts and the clock runs.

Maybe when the Blazers have arguably as much talent as the top teams in the league and beat one of the top two teams...
