Importantly, you didn't become a fucking Nazi when things went bad.

You didn't vote for Reagan, you didn't vote for Nixon. You didn't vote for Bush I or Bush II. You didn't increase fascism as it slowly rose in the United States over decades. You protested Vietnam and the Iraq War and the war in Afghanistan. You didn't contribute to this situation at all. You followed the rules. You were promised a reward by your parents' generation and their parents' generation of politicians. And now that you're trying to get what's yours, a million decisions people made over the entirety of your adult life have culminated in your metaphorical grandchildren voting for a dictator. It's demoralizing, because you never contributed to this at all.

This election made me realize more than anything that I am really out of touch with young red state people these days but at the same time really glad I chose to settle down and invest in the blue coast of tolerance and empathy. Just like in the 60s and 70s....I'm in the minority again in my own homeland politically and that's not unfamiliar in my life. I left a very red county in the mid west when I was 17 and never looked back. I'm at home in Lane County Oregon and that's not ever going to change. Just like the election, fishing sucked yesterday...not a nibble but a great way to meditate and wash out the brain. Now we have Elon Musk in the Dick Cheney control booth and Trump on the golf course....this is Musk's administration. Trump is just a prop. Hopefully someone is going to pay attention to the checks and balances over the next four years because the crooks have the passwords.

Hopefully that isn't sarcasm (no green font anyway). But I did (or didn't) do much of what you pointed out (though I am a Vietnam era vet). I was a green, naive young man who had himself and a young wife to support. We kept our heads down and our noses to the grindstone because we had no choice (because we made the choice to marry). We were following the examples (and expectations) set for us (good, bad or indifferent). And when Reagan was elected (and re-elected) I felt just as sick to my stomach as I do now (with excellent reason, as history has shown). And yeah, it is demoralizing. I know economic conditions are rough (and housing prices are obscenely high) but they are NOT impossible. High real estate prices are NOT the fault of the Boomers. I'm certainly not buying up residential properties and jacking the rents up. It feels like so much of the younger generation would rather whine than try. I guess it's too much work to work. They want to do what they want, not what they have or need to. These are the same people who want small to no government, then cry crocodile tears when the government doesn't solve their problems. But yeah, make America great again.......

I think a big part of the confusion boomers have with the term boomer is that now it’s being used by Gen Z to mean anyone older than Gen Z. The crimes of Gen X, Boomers, even elder Millenials are wrapped up in the term boomer. It’s semantic shift; it’s confusing when it happens so fast.

I am not looking for a loop poll, just not a fan of people trying to take the moral high ground. I live in a state that Harris will eventually win by a couple of million votes.....she did not need my vote. The outcome in CA was never in doubt. If I lived in a swing state then I would have voted for her.

But I have not been happy with either party since the first time I voted 4 decades ago. Nothing has changed nor will it until they are forced to. Independents are growing for a reason. Blindly giving allegiance to either party is not helping either. I think a lot of us would prefer a moderate third party........ taking the best from each party. Unfortunately, that will never happen in my lifetime either.

We are all accountable for what happens in our country; my hackles got raised a bit because you said you followed the rules. Nazis came into power legally in the 1930s too. The Rules are great and all, but every overreach or concerning exception made at the top or even somewhere in the middle of the chain of command can’t just be accepted because that’s how the rot sets in. I’m not mad you served or lived your life; it’s just frustrating that, no matter what we do, the rule never mattered because those in power wrote them in the first place and they’re all fucking bastards.

I have no quarrel with you; I’m just processing my potential very real doom.

Yep, one of the hardest lessons I've had to learn is that "the rules" are generally bullshit and aren't worth reading.....or following. If you have enough money you can get away with anything (see the current president elect). The only time in the past few decades that I actually found that "the rules" worked is when I last had my tires rotated. Because I rotate them according to the 5K mile "rule", after 55K miles the tire wear was exactly even all the way around. Too bad the rest of life doesn't work like that......

Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it! It's comical how much of history gets repeated over and over but for whatever reason people want to think what they are living through is the best and/or worst it's ever been. I guess that's the self righteous nature of human beings.

I read what was on the attachment saying a bill to reduce social security payments for people with pensions...does that apply to PERS retired folks like me? OSEA is a State Union Shop...I replied that reducing seniors SS payments would increase homelessness...maybe I'm not following the attachment ..I'll scroll back and look

We're in this weird position of having one of the best if not THE best living standards in the world and yet our people feel they still are getting screwed over.

I wonder if part of that is that we still have such a wealth gap and rules not seeming to apply to people like Trump and Musk and then being told BY Trump and Musk that their money is being taken away by (insert at-risk group that none of them have ever met). People still think they should have more, and I think they could have more. There's no reason in this country that we can't do something about healthcare. Harris' sandwich generation idea was doable and very popular. We should be able to do things about post-secondary education costs.

If we can enact programs to hold back people who aren't doing anything that hurts us, we surely can enact programs that help people.

Tim Miller worked for McCain and Jeb Bush but really has devoted his efforts into fighting Trump. I've found a lot of his stuff on the Bulwark very informational and even therapeutic. Some of his stuff partly early in this (long) video really resonated with me.

    Yep.

This also goes to my response to an earlier post about the level and tone of the coverage the respective candidates received. I got back an article saying that Harris got significantly more positive coverage and I responded that, well, Trump said a lot of negative, crazy stuff and you have to take that into account, but you also have to take this into account. Not all this news is coming from ABC, CNN. CBS, Fox and NBC. A lot of it comes from random people who have no experience and education in journalism who are entertainers looking to find a niche, fame, and wealth.

What you say may be absolutely true, but if so it just is more evidence on the voters-are-really-fucking-stupid pile.

There's a huge difference between Harris appearing at a rally or two with some Hollywood performer and Trump being funded by the richest man on earth and a huge government contractor / subsidy recipient, and promising to put him in charge of government spending.

Those two things are not anywhere near the same.
