I remember being at Village Inn with my daughter having breakfast on a Veterans Day. She noticed a sign saying Vets get a free meal. So when they came over with the bill she told the waitress I was a veteran. She looked me up and down and said, “Nice try.” And walked off. My daughter was 15 at the time and was PISSED. As we went up to pay the bill she asked to talk to the manager. She straightened all up and our entire meal was comped. Guess she thought THIS is what all veterans look like. NOT this…..
Happy Veteren’s Day to all of you who served. You should be very proud. Those draft dodger hippies who didn’t, should be ashamed of yourselves…..I know your families are! #BAM
Nah. I come from a long line of draft dodger hippies. Heck, my great-great-great grandpappy got out of the civil war by claiming he was blue-gray colorblind. barfo
My grandfather deserted tsarist army and if you have any idea how Jews who were drafted into tsarist army were treated you would understand. He made his way alone to Port of Odessa, took ship to Cuba and then to New York. Probably had no papers. He married another immigrant and had four daughters. The third proudly volunteered to serve in the Navy during World War II. She was my mother. I have respect for those who served. I have respect for those who did not serve in wars they considered unjust or in armies whose purpose was repression. I have zero respect for those who cheered on wars as long as other people did the dying while they claimed bone spurs or other priorities. Tho ones John Fogerty called fortunate sons.
I never really paid attention to veterans discounts but they seem to be popping up all over all of a sudden. Probably because so few people serve anymore it’s not a major financial hit. The weed dispensaries offer 10% (35% on Veteran’s Day) off. Tuesdays at New Seasons Markets,Vets get 10% off. A lot more places offer Vets discounts also. Being on a fixed income I’ll take all the discounts I can get.
They are popping up so often I finally just added my DD-214 to my License and got a veteran tag on it. Just got 20% off my hotel bill which was almost $500 and dropped it down $100.
I cannot find my DD-214 but I recently stumbled onto the cheesy little card with my Veteran’s Administration file number on it I got when I was discharged, and all of a sudden it’s “open sesame”. Previously I tried using my Shellback card (for crossing the equator). That never worked but they always were fascinated by the story behind it…I got the new State ID/Drivers License a year and an half ago and wish I had thought to add the Veterans designation.
When I got out I made a certified copy of my DD-214 and filed it with the county clerk. I have mine but if I lose it I always have a copy available.
They discontinued the draft in 1973 and I graduated HS in 1976 so I luckily didn't have to serve. My Dad was USAF in Korea so I have much respect for all that did!
None brother. I was in the Ranger Bat but I was communications so I just told them where to go and not get killed. I did call for fire in Panama and that probably left some mortally injured.
