Seems that hundreds of thousands (soon to be millions) are flocking to bluesky as an Elon-free twitter replacement. How many of y'all have made the move?

I created an account a while back. I generally use twitter for sports only, with a little bit of politics sprinkled in, so while the format is nice, since it looks just like twitter, it obviously relies heavily on the accounts you follow being as active there as they are on twitter. So far, doesn't seem to be the case, but here's hoping it improves.

Saw something saying their customer-base has doubled since election day. IMO, won't be long before a majority of the big hitters are at least present there.

I have Elon Musk to thank for making me quit Twitter cold turkey and I haven't regretted it once, so I won't be trying Bluesky. In fact, since about a month before the election I've stopped reading online newspapers, listening to NPR (except Fresh Air) or watching any news on TV. I'm happy in my bubble! Or at least I will be until the mushroom clouds catch me completely by surprise.

I made an account a few weeks ago.

Mainly because twitter is going to be unusable for me soon.

When Ohtani got his 50/50 Topps tweeted they would give away the 50th of 50 of a special card commemorating the feat. All you hand to do was follow them and retweet. So I did... And holy shit, that opened the gates of hell. All of a sudden my tweet feed is filled with people and companies selling sports cards, pokemon cards, magic the fuckering cards, live streams of people who bought cards and the seller is opening the packs for them (really, this is a thing?!?!) For weeks I have to block a couple of dozen trading sites and accounts every day before I can get to the things I normally like to see on Twitter. Anyway, Musk announced that he is going to take away the block feature on twitter, so when that happens I'll be in twitter hell again.

Just deactivate it. It was a cesspool anyway, now that there's an alternative AND he wants harassment and bigotry and misogynistic behavior to be rewarded there, just leave it. I did. The moment 72 million Americans wanted to take away the rights of others, I left that site and haven't looked back. I suggest everyone else do the same.

To answer the OPs question, I just now today learned about blue sky. Will look Into it, but I'm in no hurry to join any social media.

Millions already have, and in the last few days Bluesky has gone from ~14 million to ~17 million users. I made the move last month, though I killed my twitter account ages ago (I moved to tumblr first). It's got some good mechanical elements like the nuclear block and the mute lists and starter packs that make it hard for shitheads to stir up controversy out of nothing. You can even unattach your post from a quote-reblog if you don't like how they're treating you.

Right now the servers are straining hard, and the culture of bluesky will be stressed out. Bluesky as a culture doesn't quote dunk, and that's about the only activity that twitter can import that would change the culture for the worse. But the nuclear block helps that.

The Guardian left twitter for Bluesky yesterday, so the exodus of the platform biggies has begun.

Bluesky doesn't have The Algorithm, so you'll have to follow people first to get your feed going. And right now it seems totally smashed for access so I urge patience. This is a platform that's still in its failwhale era.

Yeah that's what I've been reading up on too. If I do jump in, it'll be in a few months. But I'm still not ready to swim in those waters

Definitely take your time; we're all kind of traumatized by social media.

The good news is your timeline is only the people you follow, in reverse chronological order. So if you want your experience to be small, it can remain quite small. I only follow 80 or so people and it keeps my experience pretty chill. Plus you can choose a default feed that doesn't even include reblogs so you get just their original posts.

    So far so good.

My biggest pet peeve, and I don't know when or why this happened, but the feed is not in chronological order of when it posted. So I'll get shit from 3 days ago then the next one is from an hour ago. Drove me nuts.

Just a clarification, and maybe I am wrong about this, but I think the thing they are doing with the block feature is a little different.

If you have someone blocked, they'll be able to see your tweets, but they won't be able to interact with you. They won't be able to retweet you or comment on your tweets or direct message you.

The nuclear block means the blocked user can't even see you to interact with you. It obviously doesn't stop logged out screen capture horseshit but it does make it a bit more difficult.

No offense, but that logged-out screen capture stuff isn't always a bad thing. Someone once blocked me with a public account and libeled me and was taking content from my public account and making all kinds of denigrating comments about me. A couple of mutual friends clued me in and I discovered more than a half-dozen things that had legal importance.

None taken and I’m glad it worked out for you. I am a member of a marginalized community and usually such actions are taken against us, so I hold a dim view of it.

How much money do you make from your OnlyFans account?

Well, let me add a little perspective to that, too. I don't think it just worked out for me. It worked out for a lot of at-risk and struggling people that I help, too.

Lives and actions, I think, are like ripples in a pond. What we do spreads out and touches a lot of things we never realized.

My being able to see someone libeling me while I was blocked and unable to directly respond might have helped someone in a similar situation to you because I was able to be there for them.
