I find these two maps interesting: It seems to me that there's a pretty strong correlation between college education levels and likelihood of supporting the Democratic or Republican candidate. It's probably an oversimplification, but I'd say that the Democrats tailored their message largely for their college educated base. Trump and the Republicans went for votes needed to win the presidency.
