Are we ready to have one about Donovan Clingan? He’s either A. Still hurt, so sit his ass B. Scouted so going through growing pains C. Plodding big with cast iron hands and absolutely no touch around the rim
I think it's a combo of A and B, with a hint of C. But I'm not worried, since it's not like he's Ha Seung Jin out there. He really needs to have a big man coach/mentor, and spend the off season working on where he puts his hands for rebounds, and going up strong.
He is C, but I think he is struggling with A…visually he just seems to move differently than the first weeks of the season pre-injury. A will resolve, but C is what we’re stuck with. Fine for a backup big, disappointing for a lotto pick.
He is not really impactful other than shot blocking. Plodding and cannot jump. WTF would you draft a BASKETBALL player that cannot jump? It was another draft bust for Joe. He is really really bad at the draft. I don't see Scoot or DC in the league in a few years. Trade everyone for picks.
I like Clingan. I think he's been a little more plodding since coming back from injury. However, we need to pick up a small ball C so we can dictate the mismatch and not the other way around. At the same time let's give Clingan time bfore deciding he's hit his ceiling.
I'm not worried about Clingan I think he's bumping against the rookie wall and a fleshed out scouting book. He's going to be good but fans are impatient with young players, so I get it.
It’s the kid’s freshman year and he hasn’t seen all the centers he’s going to face yet. The game is super fast for him and he’s not the strongest big man in the game anymore. I’m not declaring him a bust at all yet. Hes learning to set screens and roll but his shot blocking and rebounding are further along than his offense or man to man defense. This season he’s going to fall for pump fakes and get blown by. I’m not sure we have the greatest development staff either. I’d give him 2 seasons to show progress before I’d start to worry
A "1 week wonder" whose per 36 numbers are 12.4 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 1 steal across a 28 game sample size??? No the dude is a legit 7 footer who lacks the mobility to be used in all situations but will be cleaning the glass, dunking and making the paint a no fly zone for the next decade plus whenever he's on the court. He'll probably also develop a reliable three and be a great roll man in the P&R. Why do you have to make yourself look so silly just trying to go as negative as possible?
One from column A, two or three from column B, and the people at the next table ordered one from column C so I can smell it from here.
Back when plodding centers were a commodity in the league, I believe the rule of thumb if I am remembering correctly was to give anyone over 6’10” 2-3 years to develop and acclimate properly? He seems wired to be a guy who tries to fix his deficiencies so I will give him time to earn his lumps. Think his floor is a full time back up but who knows what he could grow into, I have seen some flashes so I have belief. lastly I think I will hold off for some quality coaching, this team has had decent coaching twice this year by my count. He didn’t blow any doors off during those two but was at least a net positive in one of them.
Here are concerns and positives about Clingan you can’t improve slow feet all that much He has shit hands He has ZERO post moves He refuses to dunk the ball unless lobbed He gets pushed around under the basket on rebounds He has a high basketball IQ He is a good passer You can’t teach height and reach He seems coachable He sets good screens when not fouling He has great shot blocking instincts
