<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>THE JOURNAL NEWS(Original publication: July 28, 2006)New carpet covers the floors at Weeb Ewbank Hall, but the most telling change for the Jets at their Hofstra practice facility is on the walls. Each room has a digital clock, which by itself is nothing radical. But each timepiece is perfectly synchronized with all the others."That's just a characteristic of Jets football players: You're on time, you're responsible, you try to do the right thing," rookie quarterback Kellen Clemens said. "That's the situation right now under Coach Mangini."The Jets open their first training camp today under Eric Mangini, the 35-year-old Bill Belichick protege who was brought in to instill some of the New England Patriots' success. And Clemens, the second-round pick out of Oregon who signed a contract yesterday, personifies the team's latest new beginning as it embarks upon the 2006 season.Everybody has a chance to play. Nobody's job is guaranteed.Time is of the essence to turn the franchise around."Everybody is on the hot seat," Mangini said during June mini-camp. "I mean, everybody is on the hot seat. Everybody has to figure out a way to make this team and a way to help us win. That's the most important thing that they can do as players, is figure those things out. The hot seat is universal."So Clemens finds himself in a four-way battle with incumbent Chad Pennington, import Patrick Ramsey and long shot Brooks Bollinger to be the Jets' starting quarterback.Though it's the team's highest-profile competition, it's just one of many that will be waged in training camp as Mangini tries to jump-start the Jets from last year's injury-filled 4-12 disaster.Adding to last season's ugliness was the constant speculation that then-coach Herman Edwards would bolt to replace Dick Vermeil in Kansas City, which he eventually did.For good measure, Mike Tannenbaum replaced Terry Bradway as the general manager shortly after Edwards' negotiated departure.Coordinators Brian Schottenheimer and Bob Sutton are also in their first years, though Sutton, the former Army coach, has been a defensive coach with the Jets since 1999."I think everybody is excited. In a lot of different ways it's a new beginning," Clemens said. "It's a new head coach, a new offense, a new offensive coordinator. I think everybody is excited to get back."Much as Pennington was anointed the team's quarterback of the future when he was picked out of Marshall in 2000, Clemens' leadership skills and mobility have given the team hope he can eventually become the starter. But going from college to pro signal-caller takes time."I've been cramming the playbook," Clemens said. "I think I'm progressing along. The playbook is pretty extensive. It's pretty much everything I thought and imagined an NFL playbook would be. There is no school anymore. This is what I do. That's my job to learn that playbook."I think Coach Mangini expects from the quarterback position, no matter which one of the four of us are in, an understanding of what we're trying to do and consistent results. He hasn't sat us down and said anything specific, but those are his expectations."As training camp progresses, Mangini plans to make his expectations loud and clear. He said during May's rookie mini-camp he would lead some of the drills."I enjoy doing that, I enjoy coaching, I enjoy teaching, I enjoy helping the players get better," Mangini said. "I think in any area I can help them get better. I think it's important they hear from me, 'This is what I want.' There's no way you can make that clearer than if you're telling them yourself and showing them yourself."Thus begins Clemens' indoctrination into NFL life. It's something that Clemens ? who had never been farther east than games in Illinois and Mississippi before being drafted by the Jets ? has been dreaming about since he was a sophomore in high school. The reality hasn't quite sunk in yet."Shoot, it might take all the way up to the first game," Clemens said. "I've floated around with the thought of it. I get goose bumps right now just thinking about thinking about it."But before Clemens can run through the tunnel at Tennessee's LP Field for the Jets' season opener against the Titans on Sept. 10, he has to navigate training camp. That journey begins today.Note: The Jets also signed first-round pick Nick Mangold, getting all their players signed in time for the start of training camp. Mangold, a center out of Ohio State, is penciled in to start with fellow rookie D'Brickashaw Ferguson. The No. 4 overall pick signed his deal Wednesday night. The team also signed offensive lineman Pete McMahon and waived fullback Luke Lawton.</div>

Im kinda hoping though that Brad Smith impresses enough to earn McCareins spot since he drops everything, or so it seems.

McCareins has one of the worst cases of the drops I've ever seen and Cotchery just hasnt proved anything since they day he entered the NFL. Im hoping that'll change, especially with Cotchery whos still young, but its hard to get your hopes up there. :glare:
apparently brad smith and cotcherry are both ahving nice training camps while mccariens has been nothing special
If they were going to have Pennington start after 6 days then they're crazy. Why even play him? He'll get hurt after week 6 anyways.
This was just a rumor. It is not true whatsoever. Though, Pennington probably will be the starting QB, as many reporters have said that he is having the best training camp by far. Whoever starts, I hope they last the season. Clemens will probably be starting next year though.
