Maybe there isn't anything additional to do. Just want to see the fires get put out, the people helped, and things rebuilt. Tired of seeing the fires being used politically. I know there is a lot of mis and disinformation out there. Waiting for the smoke to clear to get a real scope of what exactly caused this, and if there was mismanagenent. Other than the reservoir being empty and hydrants running out of water, not sure what's what with all that and whether there is more. Again, waiting to hear. Its being made to sound like the Mayor knew about the fires before she left, but they started after that, and she came back and seems to doing her job. Not like Ted going to Cancun. Trump and the right are trying make Newsome and the Mayor scapegoats for sure. The focus should be on the neighborhoods and people effected not on politics. Seems like Newsome and the Mayor are doing the best they can.
No doubt mistakes are happening. But there is a huge difference between mistakes in midst of crisis and mismanagement, incompetence, or deliberate sabotage. Incidentally, fire department doesn't maintain hydrants, that is water department. Agree with everything @Chris Craig said. Nothing being done on the right is helping either put out fires, caring for displaced or rebuilding.
Unfortunately, we are going into another red flag warning starting this afternoon until Wednesday afternoon, this time it seems like LA is out of the extreme fire hazard area but I am sure that the winds will pick up there as well even if not to the speed they expect in Riverside, Orange County and San Diego counties. I just hope there is enough containment there that the increase in winds will not create new disaster areas. Like the last one, we are just on the edge of that area - so with some luck nothing happens around here. Wind at our place is not supposed to get over 20MPH, but all it takes is something a couple of miles away and it could race pretty quickly, we have experienced it with the Cocos fires of 2014 when we were evacuated. (It was minor compared to what we are seeing now in LA, but even that was not a pleasant experience). We are actually flying to Portland Wednesday morning so will miss the end of that red flag excitement. Of course, our connecting flight is in LAX - so that might not work that well.
I wouldn't question the Chiefs evaluation of issues. If you cant trust the Fire Chiefs take on issues related to dealing with fire, thats not good. Glad Newsome is looking into it. $17 million in cuts to the fire department? That's a big chunk of money. Do those guys come at City level? State level? Are they based on federal money? Certainly something to look into, and it seems like it is. Those 100 broken fire fighting apparatus need to be fixed pronto and I am sure they are on that too. Probably have mechanics on it as we speak. Hopefully, the winds chill in the coming days so they can get maximum air support. California needs some rain.
I would argue that "mistakes in the midst of a crisis" being made by the people whose responsibility it is to manage said crisis does in fact equate to mismanagement and incompetence. I would agree, however, that sabotage is a bridge too far.
Being competent means that whatever mistakes you make don't prevent you from actually accomplishing the intended task. If your mistakes are so severe that they result in failure, that is basically the definition of incompetence.
The fires aren't raging due to incompetence of administration and certainly not firefighters. The winds prevented aircraft from flying to drop fire retardant. No city water system is capable of handling such massive fires. Perfect storm of conditions. And a female fire chief is not source of problems. Or a Democratic governor.
Uh, ok. So let's say my job is stacking boxes in a warehouse. After stacking several hundred boxes successfully, I drop one and it breaks open. Incompetence, or a mistake? Attempting to stack that box resulted in failure. Was I incompetent for that box, but competent for the others? Incompetent overall, since I failed to stack them all correctly? barfo
I'm only on the second marriage but in 20 years when I turn 90 I plan to find another newer, faster and more efficient upgrade. That's why it was my first divorce....I'm still in the game!!
it's unfortunately career ending...the robotic box stacker will take your job now and not need a lunch break
Musk tried to get a firefighter to say governor and fire chief responsible. He didn't. Musk then said Newsom legalized looting. False and encouraging crime, so they can then say California is lawless. Fox showed pictures of leaders of fire department, women, and said look at them, they don't know what they are doing. Oh, and indigenous people to blame, California was too nice to them. Protecting their land. Only white males competent to fight fires. And only if they are Republican.
