I'm surprised people were so sure of the lions when literally all their gamechangers on defense were out. Their defense was decimated with injury. I wanted lions to go to the SB but I knew they weren't going to with that defense.

And they have ownership that cares now. Perennial playoffs for commanders and Daniels will be on par with Mahomes soon. Maybe not in titles and all that, but in just status. Mahomes may finally have competition.

I think Jayden Daniels proved he really is Him. Bright future and could end up one of the all time Greats. Amazing rookie year.

Josh Allen get another chance to lose to Mahomes.

I have no NFL team. Do we want Buffalo to stop KC or is a threepeat the better storyline to root for?

    Josh Allen to win one.

The Chiefs can win again next year.

    I'm relatively new to football

Third down results in a sack, but there's a flag for a violation by the offense. Offense gets moved 5 yards back but they get to repeat 3rd down. Offense commits a violation but benefit from it. Why can't the penalty be declined and the result is 4th down?

Now if instead of a sack a TD happened but there's a flag for a violation by the offense, then yeah, no score and move them back 5 yards and repeat the 3rd down.

Is there a nuance I'm not understanding or do I have a point in questioning the rule?

You mean the defensive team / coach can? I'm confused why it wouldn't be automatic

Bills vs Ravens yesterday. I guess the reason is because the flag is for a false start by the offense. So essentially the play is dead before the sack even happened.

But still, I feel the sack should be counted. In my opinion, the good play by defense should not be deemed useless because the offense broke the rule.

Actually that should technically be a foul on defense for roughing the passer if they sacked the qb after the play had already been whistled dead.

The coach from the team not penalized gets to decide whether to accept or decline the penalty. If they declined the penalty in your first case, it would be a sack and fourth down. If they declined that sack, I'm not sure if the sack gets counted still in the stats, but it would be third down with a loss of yards. Always better to accept that penalty in that situation, unless maybe you are trying to push the other team out of field goal range or like you said if a touch down happens.

Yeah, it depends on when that sack came.

They might call it a defensive personal foul instead of roughing the passer but similar outcome.

Might as well be the Chiefs. We can say we saw the best NFL dynasty ever.
