Also, the only team Miller would waive for was the rangers. Drury shouldn’t have given up a first since Vancouver was desperate to move him but drury desperate to save his ass so probably didn’t care what happens in the future

Not impressed with the deal. With an aging core I don’t care to add another 31+ yo player to it, and giving up Mancini and a 1st is full of suck. Chytil unfortunately doesn’t count much because his career can be over any minute.

I guess at least it's top 13 protected, but knowing the Rangers they will end up picking 16th.

I'll disagree with you guys' big time. I think this is a great trade for the Rangers:

1. Miller is signed for 5 more years after this one. So, this isn't the usual rental deal Drury has been famous for.

2. Chytil is a not a big loss. I am a big fan of his, but you simply cannot count on him even 1% going forward, his career could end on any play. With over a $4.4M cap hit, he's a huge risk.

3. I like Mancini, but respectfully I think some people are overrating him. He looks like a solid 3rd pair, maybe 4th dman. Certainly, has value, but he isn't some major loss. Plus, with Borgen signed long term, we have Fox, Schneider, and Borgen on RD for many years to come. Mancini becomes a bit less valuable for us.

4. The cap is going up to $95.5M next season, an increase of $7.5M from this season. Then up to $104M the following season, and $113.5M the season after that. Those are huge cap increases coming up. Miller at $8M per for 5 more seasons is a great AAV.

5. The 1st rounder is top 13 protected in this year's draft. So, when we miss the playoffs, we keep the pick. Most likely Vancouver will get our 2026 1st round pick.

6. In the past two postseasons, Miller has 30 points in 30 games, so he is a playoff performer. Plus, in the past 3 seasons he has 99, 82, and 103 points (on pace for 71 points over 82 games this season). That is stud level.

7. He is awesome on FO's. 58.6% this season, 56.3% last season, and 55% the prior season. That is a HUGE plus for this team. We will have 4 FO men over 52% now, that is a great thing to have.

I think it's a great move, and Miller is exactly the kind of player we have been missing. You could make the case the only maybe pretty valuable asset we gave up was the 2026 1st rounder (I am assuming we'll keep the 2025 1st rounder as it will be a top 13 pick).

I think the key is how can they find a way to move Z going into next year. Even with these huge increases, which will help alot, I still don't see any way you keep him around. Raantanen could be in play either way.

Maybe Zibanejad will accept a trade this summer, and maybe not, but with Miller and Trocheck at C, it lowers the reliance on Zibanejad now, which is a plus. If he plays 3rd line C, so be it. Not ideal at all with an $8.5M cap hit, but on the ice if he had to play that role, so be it.

Assuming they don't catch lightning in a bottle the next 4 weeks, what Drury needs to do now is deal Lindgren and Smith for picks, that will help make up for the 2026 1st rounder we dealt for Miller.

I have to say, if you aren't a fan of this trade, I 100% respect that, but I am not sure what else you could want. What did we really give up? Cannot count on Chytil, Mancini who was whatever prior to looking decent this season, and a 1st rounder in 2026, for a big physical 90 + point guy, who in each of the past 3 seasons scored over a point a game (averaging 95 points per season) and is signed for 5 more seasons at a very good AAV. Not sure what's not to like.

Yes, technically they can. The point is, if this season goes into the crapper they are covered, that's what really matters IMO, if they somehow win the lottery and pick top 3. If they give up the 15th pick this season, I'll live.

As critical as I have been of Drury, I have to give him some kudos, while acknowledging he still has some major work to do.

He got rid of Trouba and Goodrow's full cap hits, without taking back a bad contract or giving up an asset.
He added a good solid dman with size in Borgen, who will be here for the foreseeable future.
He was able to move Chytil's huge risk contract that had us in a tough spot, because he was important to the team on the 3rd line.
He added a player in Miller, who fits almost the exact mold of what we have been missing, and he's here for years with a very good contract.

Now he needs to add some more picks by dealing Lindgren and Smith, and then make another big add this summer, but he has done some good work with the above moves.

Players typically decline after they turn 32. Miller will be 32 soon. This is such rangers trade. Getting a guy who has already peaked in his career and will be on a decline. It might be ok for a short-term. It does not look good long term which the rangers always make these types of trades

I think that's very fair, maybe you get 3 more good seasons out of Miller, and seasons 4 and 5 of his contract are a bit shaky. With that said, I obviously like the trade because I think Miller fits exactly what we need, but almost as importantly I don't think the Rangers really gave up all that much. The only way I could see my opinion of that changing is if they are horrible next season, and the 2026 1st rounder becomes a top 7 or 8 pick (that's another reason why Drury needs to ensure we have a top-level team heading into next season). Short of that, I simply don't see what we gave up being all that great.

I don’t buy the “but this year’s pick is protected” as a good thing because i am of the opinion that this team is more likely to get worse than better next season, and i don’t see us as a serious contender this year to begin with.

Panarin, Zib, Trocheck, JT Miller, Kreider, Shesterkin have already peaked so as years go by they’re going to get worse, not better, and they are all on big contracts who will get big minutes and drag this team down as they age and aren’t held accountable.

I agree with you in that I think that's the biggest driver in the deal. If one thinks the Rangers will be worse next season, I can totally see thinking this isn't a good trade because they may lose a very high draft pick in 2026. In some ways maybe the best bet is they miss the playoffs but pick 14-16 so Vancouver gets their pick this season (for the record I also agree the Rangers aren't even close to a serious contender this season).

With that said, and maybe I'm being overly optimistic, I think the Rangers will be a better team next season.

Miller will be here for the full season, which will make them very strong down the middle. I think their D is looking better with Borgen added, which has also helped stabilize Miller. Plus, with the cap going up by $7.5M, it gives the Rangers flexibility to make moves this summer. I have to believe if Drury has learned anything it's that he needs to be bold, and the core badly needed to be changed. I don't think he's done reshaping the team before the start of next season.

But I do agree, that is the one risk I see in this deal. They finish with a top 13 pick this season, very possible/likely, then they are really bad next season, and Vancouver gets their top 5 or 7 pick. Simply put, Drury cannot let that happen. You don't deal for Miller if you aren't going to make moves to put this team in the best position to be back near the top next season. He has to have learned from mistakes I assume/hope.

I would argue the other key is give it a few weeks with Miller, but if in mid/late Feb the Rangers are whatever and not a legit SC threat, Drury must deal off players to put them in the best position to excel next season. If we are battling for a WC spot, Drury has to bite the bullet and deal Lindgren, Smith, and I would say Kreider as well to a team not on his 15 team NT list, or if he would waive his MNTC entirely.

Exactly, nyr31. They need to build for a longer term. This deal is very short sighted. Thats why I don't like it.

One other comment to add, how do the Rangers go about doing what you guys are suggesting.

Igor has a long-term deal for big money, and a NMC. Fox has a long-term deal for big money, and a NMC. Zibanejad has a long-term deal for big money, and a NMC. Trocheck and Lafreniere make a lot of money on long-term deals.

I say this in a respectful way, but I don't think what you guys are advocating for has any real chance of happening. I am trying to live in the reality of what is plausible. In no world are the Rangers dealing off these high-priced guys, if they even can due to NTC's/NMC's. That is why I am focusing on the best plausible path for the Rangers, and to me that was/is trading for a guy like Miller with term on his contract, dealing guys like Lindgren/Smith/maybe Kreider for assets next season and beyond, making some more moves in the off-season to set the team up in the best position possible for next season, and the following few seasons.

I believe that is the most realistically plausible path the Rangers will take, whether I think they should deal off players or not, as I don't see a way, they would do that. They did it once a few years back, and I don't see them doing it again this soon given the makeup of the current team.

Love the trade, have wanted it done for weeks, don't think Drury gave up much at all. for the return. The desire to rebuild always makes for great board activity but the Rangers have been to the finals twice in the last 3 years and came up short, one last chance to go for it. I think Drury did what he could and though it might not have been done tactfully Chris was even able to move a few players with high cap restricted contracts. I've always liked Chytil and it's impressive how he can weave through multiple defenders but the guy doesn't score. Mancini has great size and I thought he should have been in the lineup but to get Miller was worth giving up.

The only thing I like about the trade is I think Miller would be a perfect fit with Cuylle and Othmann and now the can quickly faze Zibanedouche out. However Drury must now get some draft picks back.

Agreed, he needs to get some picks back. That is why Lindgren and Smith should 100% be dealt by the trade DL assuming the Rangers don't become a big-time team with Miller added.

The 5 games before the 4 nations will be very telling. I'll say right here the Rangers need to win 4 of 5 to have any shot at making the playoffs/proving they are legit.

At Boston, Vegas, Boston, Pitt, at CBJ

When you look at the standings, the CBJ game is a 100% must win, and worst case they need to split with Boston, as the Rangers have 3 games in hand. Overall, they need 4 of 5, and I'll say today is almost a must win when you look at how many teams are ahead of them, and games in hand or not they'll be 6 points behind Boston if they lose.

The thing about Miller is he's probably the only center in the league that shuts McDavid down. So I see Lavy using him against Hughes, Barkov, McDavid, McKinnon, all the top centers in that role. Zibanejad is worthless. He's playing daddy now. This also enables the coach to start scratching Zibanedouche, put in Brodzinsky who is not bad in his role and make him accept a trade. Moving Lindgren is risky. The system other than Fortescue is light on left handed defenseman.

Knowing the Rangers were never going to sell off all these higher priced vets, if they even could due to clauses, I don't really see what there is to dislike about this deal. But again, Drury needs to back it up and ensure the Rangers have a top-level team into next season if their 1st rounder is going to Vancouver. That's on Drury.

Something not mentioned yet, the one dman they got back in the trade, L shot Brannstrom, looks like maybe a decent 6th or 7th dman. He has averaged over 16 mpg in his career, and the past two seasons he's been a + player on a bad Ottawa team. I don't expect him to have a role, but in a pinch, he could play on the 3rd pair for a few games if needed.

I'll also add, the Rangers do still have a decent amount of cap space this season, and they could use it if they prove worthy before the trade DL. Either way Drury is not done this season IMO, he'll either trade away players if the Rangers still stink or maybe add a player if they take off with Miller.

The Miller is a cancer thing in the locker room is also bullshit. The Vancouver players were pissed he got traded instead of Pettersson. Boudreau said when he coached Miller, he told him he doesn’t always have to be the sword meaning he will hold players accountable when they play like shit, which is exactly what this fucking team needs. Much like with Messier, sometimes the message is much better received from a player, instead of always being the coach. Having Miller here at the least will give our young wingers a much better chance of developing. Zibanedouche is worthless and no young players can ever play with him. The lefty d-man prospect they got who is in college is also interesting.

Why did they trade away Miller in the first place. I never understood that move.
