They used to say that it was because of the lack of hotel space (which I always found to be suspect), but now it's because of the homeless and crime. Moda Center at the Rose Quarter would be a solid arena to host the weekend's events (or host one or two in another city (Seattle?). If you even wanted to, coordinate with the city and the Winterhawks to use VMC as a staging area for things as you need them. It's not really brain surgery.

Yet there’s a thread about it. I’ll try not to keep saying this, but did you guys see the amount of money they just got for the new TV deal? They may say things in media circles about wanting to fix this and that or we need to change this and that……but guess what? Those checks are cashing, BIGTIME! They would be concerned if they WEREN’T getting paid. For some reason a bunch want to keep saying how bad things are going….

NOLA looks like the set of a post apocalyptic movie. Theres abandoned blocks around the Houston and Oakland arenas. I still believe the NBA is mad at the state of Oregon over the sports gambling lawsuit from the early to mid 90s

It's not just the number of hotel rooms, it's where they're at. The NBA wants people to be able to walk out of their hotel rooms and be in the middle of the All-Star party. I don't know what the count would be, but I can't imagine that there's anywhere close to that number within walking distance of Moda/Rose Quarter. The other three cities that have never hosted an All-Star Game are Sacramento, OKC, and Memphis. None of those cities are able to provide the kind of centralized hotel space within walking distance of their facilities.

Wow. A quadruple post. You need to be especially good to accomplish that.

Edit: Now downsized to a double post. Meh. Nothing special there.

I have not watched the all-star festivities for a few years. After last, weekend, do we really care if we ever host it?
Portland got the Original Dream Team. That was better than any all-star game......ever!

I don't disagree. I think the NBA cannot handle some people walking to the Lloyd Center area for seven minutes and find other places to stay. Like you, I am talking about media people. I don't think there is that much of a lack of space around the Rose Quarter for the great majority of that. As I also stated prior, there could be some staging areas at the Coliseum. The Portland area has always been considered a no-go for the league; market or not. Look at David Stern, he would have been happy if the Fakers were the only team in the league as long as they drew fans. Stern hated small market teams; he loathed them. I had high hopes for Silver, but he's basically of the same mold. As for Sac, OKC and Memphis, those are also considered small markets by standards by Silver and the vengeful spirit ghost of David Stern (could we get Sam and Dean Winchester to just take him out already?!).

Dwight Jaynes Wrote a piece two or three years ago illustrating my original point that if Portland would have had any chance at getting an All-Star Weekend, it was squashed by the crime, homelessness and lack of police effort. As much as I love this city, I'm ashamed that we cannot make it better. Don't get me wrong; I am working on that in my own right. Until our social issues are addressed successfully, there will be no All-Star Weekend in the Rose City.

Last weekend was rainy in Portland (shocker). Nobody wants to come here this time of year.

Gordon not winning that year was a travesty.

This is exactly why the league doesn’t care whatsoever with the whole, “THE NBA IS UNWATCHABLE” vibe. They are getting PAID regardless.
