Amazing how much of the Neo-Nazi playbook is being used by rank and file Republicans now.

Looks like Trump about faced on closing the education department because he knew he didn't have the votes in Congress and the Senate.

When the US entered World War II, the young men drafted were given literacy tests. (So were the women who volunteered. My mother was one.) At that time, 75% of young Americans did not graduate from high school and quite a few were totally or functionally illiterate. The numbers were especially high in rural areas, among the poor and Black Americans, who were barred from what schools did exist, and in the South. After the war, with US clearly established as world leader, modernizing the country meant a more educated work force was needed and for the first time free public compulsory education became the law nationwide.

It was far from perfect. Schools were, and still largely are, segregated. Using local funding meant class differences between poor and rich communities were perpetuated. Idealistic young people who entered teaching profession after the war were often witch hunted out in the 1950s for their leftist views, replaced by uninspired and uninspiring conformists. Mandatory Christian prayer was the norm until the 1960s.

There has been a constant struggle between progress and reaction in our schools. Teaching the true history of the country and the world. Teaching voices other than straight white Christian men. Inclusiveness for non-English speakers and students with disabilities. Recognizing importance of art and music. Teaching science in science classes against opposition of those who wanted science to be bible stories. The current brouhaha over "critical race theory", a law school course never taught in grade school, and the current demons of "DEI" because if you say diversity, equity, inclusion, access they sound like good things, and wholly imaginary "wokism" and "gender theory" are just latest iteration.

But the real program of far right has always been opposed to increasing education. Project 2025 has at its core eliminating the 20th and certainly 21st centuries and all gains towards greater civil rights and equality. Including public schools.

Trump nominated Richard Whitaker as NATO ambassador. He was briefly acting attorney general in Trump 1.0. He is sasquatch believer who wrote a book about it. He sells stupid inventions including special toilet for very endowed men. After some of his crazier views were skewered by Stephen Colbert Trump claimed he never heard of the guy. That was then.

Whitaker has no diplomatic or military experience and limited knowledge about NATO. His total lack of qualifications make him the right person to withdraw US from NATO and effectively end the alliance.
