Maggie, the oldest chimpanzee in San Francisco Zoo, died of cancer at age 56.

As the oldest female, she was matriarch of the chimpanzee clan, mediating disputes between younger animals. She liked to make elaborate nests from blankets, always choosing brightest colors (chimps, like humans, have full color vision).

    Rest in peace, cousin.

Saw this and didn't think it was anything anyone should care about.

Then I realized it wasn't about Maggie Haberman.

RIP 56 seems like a pretty good run for a chimp...I just buried one of my favorite hens yesterday and she passed quietly near her nest. She gave me eggs for many years. The other 5 are probably not going to make it through another winter but I still get two eggs a day....used to get half a dozen a day. Went to buy chics and they sold out in 90 minutes at the local feed store...next batch will be in April. I'm not a big fan of zoos but the SF zoo is one of the nicer ones...Portland's and San Diego's as well.

Shouldn't you have called the county health department to see if they wanted to test it for bird flu?

I hadn't thought about that but maybe I should have although she's at the age to pass away..we've been waiting for this chapter..they've been a good flock for us. We don't eat them so they die naturally. My chickens are in a good environment and not overcrowded..probably a quarter acre pen for 6 hens and large clean coops. She was healthy, just old. The other 5 are spry and looking healthy as well..if another goes I may call the county just to be safe so it's a good suggestion

I think mention of Maggie building nests and always selecting brightest colors that resonated. Being a crafter I recognize the urge to make things and her primitive esthetic sense. Chimps and humans share 98% of our DNA including apparently crafting.

My grandparents, who lived in Oregon City, somehow ended up with a pet chimpanzee in the early/mid 70's. My grandmother eventually sent her to a live at a wildlife refuge somewhere in Oregon.
