<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>CINCINNATI (AP) -- Running back Clinton Portis partially dislocated his left shoulder during Washington's opening series of the preseason Sunday night, a significant setback for the Redskins' revamped offense. An MRI test detected the injury, which involves the bone popping out of place temporarily in the shoulder socket. Standard treatment involves rest and strengthening exercises. There was no immediate indication how long he will be sidelined.Portis opened the game by carrying for 8 yards, then blocked on pass plays. He didn't return for the next series, and headed for the locker room a little while later without his jersey to get the shoulder tested. The Redskins got Portis from Denver in a trade for cornerback Champ Bailey in March 2004. He started 15 games for the Redskins the next season, and ran for more than 1,300 yards for the third straight year.Portis started every game last season, running for a club-record 1,516 yards. He had nine 100-yard games, helping the Redskins win 10 games and reach the playoffs as a wild-card team.He was counted on again to steady an offense that has undergone significant changes in the offseason. Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, who called the plays throughout his career, turned the offense over to assistant Al Saunders in the offseason.Portis' backup is Ladell Betts, who carried 89 times for 338 yards in 12 games last season and missed four games because of a knee injury. The Redskins' corps of running backs sustained another injury in the second quarter Sunday, when Kerry Carter had to be helped off the field with an injured right knee. Carter was signed as a free agent in January after missing last season.Washington's second-string linebacker Chris Clemons sprained a ligament in his left knee late in the first quarter. Clemons, who started one game last season, had a brace placed on the knee before he was helped off the field. He didn't put weight on his left leg.</div>

Sounds a lot worse than it really is. He could practice tomorow if he wanted to. But I doubt he will play another down this preseason.

I would expect him to shut it down for the next 2 weeks except for maybe non-contact practices just to play it safe and then play in the final preseason week.

Redskins are done without Portis. As I said in the thread about him possibly going to the Jets, Betts isnt an everydown back in the league and would be exposed as a starter and without a Running Game it will be much more difficult to pass, even with all of your 'targets'.And ESPN is reporting Portis is out indefinately....so thats not good news for Redskins fans, especially since you dont have years to blow with Gibbs probably retireing one of the next few years and the salary cap hell waiting to happen. :whistling:

I donno why Portis laid such a brutal hit on the guy who picked it off, he's not trying out for LB or anything and hes definitely got the #1 RB spot locked up, so why put yourself at risk for injury in a pre-season game? I love his aggressiveness but there it wasn't necessary to go all out on the guy.As for the injury, don't you remember Portis having recurring shoulder pains/problems last season Punisher? It didn't keep him off the field but he would often talk about it in his Wednesday interviews. I think he knows how to handle this sort of thing with his body and knows what to do with it in terms of how he will practice and how long he will stay off the field this pre-season. I expect him to be on the field on the Monday night game, no sooner, and no later. He will be fine.

You dont have time on the field to think about all of that, all you're concerned about is knocking the hell out of that guy. And I'll give Portis credit...if it was anybody else (and didnt fuck up his shoulder) he would have been on Jacked'up. 2) A seperated shoulder and 'shoulder pains' are 2 different things. Im not sure on the exact details of the injury so I cant say, but injuries listed as 'Out Indefinately' are normally very serious.

He had problems like this in high school and he recovered quickly, and this time it actually slipped back in place which is good.Knowing him, he would even play this next preseason game if it wasn't preseason.BTW Kerry Carter is out for the season, Jesse Lumsden is questionable, and Ladell Betts might give it a go next game.

That's sad.</div>It's called preseason you fucking idiot.</div>You can't just say it's just a preseason game. The first preseason game is a barometer to see where you're at after all of the OTA's and the first few weeks of training camp. And you can tell after two or three offensive series where you're offense it. So with the offensive starters playing, the offense didn't look good at all.So you can't just say it's a preseason game.I was listening to the John Thompson Show with Redskins Fan's very own, Doc Walker, and he too express concern about the offense, saying the exact same thing I'm saying now. You can not over look the preseason. If you want to say that the score doesn't matter than that's fine and dandy. But to see your starting offensive not playing well after all the OTA's, training camp, and all those interviews saying the offense look good - truth be told, they didn't look good. You practice how you play! Maybe this is what Joe Gibbs needed so that he can show his guys they are a long ways away. And now he can start the really grinding work.As for Portis, the Redskins are DONE if he doesn't come back. And even if he does, you're talking about a shoulder dislocation. I read in here that someone said that he's had this problem in high school. Playing with injury like that in high school is totally different than the Pro's. Portis even said himself that when he get back teams are going to key on his shoulder. That's an injury that will take well after the season to completely heal. But I do believe he will play in the season-opener. But even if he plays will he be ready physically?

I believe our offensive starters only played one series, sweetheart. And we CAN win the SB without Portis. The Coryell offense which Saunders brought in relies on such running plays that will make RBs look great (ex. Faulk, Holmes, Johnson -- who were they before Saunders?). The Coryell offense, all time-based, also requires a smart QB who can have a pro bowl season by just understanding the plays and the timing. This will take a month for Brunell to get used to, and about 2 months for Campbell to get used to. But it's not much different than Gibbs's playbook, it's the same old school language. We CAN win a lot of games without Portis, and we WILL win a lot of games without Portis. But I got bad news for the Cowboys fans... Portis WILL play in the season.
