I heard somewhere that Flagg potentially brings in an obscene amount of value for whatever team gets him. So it makes sense to do it after. But not necessarily caused by losing out on him.
and are currently valued at 4.6B Portland is valued at 3.65B https://www.cnbc.com/2025/02/14/cnbcs-official-nba-team-valuations-2025.html
Teams always sell for more than they're valued at. Despite its issues, the franchise is one of 30, in an insanely elite group.
There are non-horrible billionaires? Well, if there are (a) they just became a billionaire, but (b) they won't be for long because they plan to give it all away
usually that's true. I'd estimate around 4B if it was the Blazers WITH the #1 pick in 2025...how much of a premium for that 1st pick? $b-->4.5B?
What were the Timberwolves valued at when that agreement was signed? Glen Taylor was an idiot though - so most sellers probably would have profited far more than him.
obviously if they had won the lottery, they still might have announced the new today, but they would be using that lever heavily
No, I agree they were probably announcing either way today. They would of just been asking for more if we had the golden ticket handed to us yesterday.
So Timberwolves sold last month for $1.5 billion. But the agreement was signed in 2021. Forbes shows it worth $3.1 billion last year in 2024 which is #28 in the NBA. It was worth $1.6 billion in 2021. So I guess teams can sell for LESS than their value. I'd expect Jody and the trust get a much better price than Glen Taylor though.
Don’t think it would have gone through by the draft. If someone said “I want them today” and it doesn’t go through in time… Who actually makes the decision come draft day? I’d be fuming if someone else other than the legitimate ownership were allowed to make that decision before everything were finalized.
Serious ish question. Does Dame put together a group to buy the team? Then retire if they win the bid?
Blazers ranked as #24 NBA franchise in worth by Forbes at $3.5 billion in October 2024. Kind of pathetic we're ranked 24th. Some of the teams ranked higher than the Blazers are even smaller markets or little fan support - Jazz, Pacers, Thunder, Kings, Hawks, Cavs, Bucks, Wizards, Raptors,
