Any of y’all do any gardening as a hobby or just casually each year growing some fruits, veggies, or herbs? I am definitely an amateur grower and have a lot of time to put into it before I actually have any idea what I’m actually doing. I’ve successfully planted and cared for some starts over the years, like peppers; which are probably(?) pretty easy to care for. Havent for a few seasons though, but this year I decided to buy some starts again. So far I’ve got spearmint which I planted in a container because supposedly planting it in the ground will allow it to grow out of control all over the area like weeds. Also bought a tomato start, and might buy one or two more, and maybe some pepper plants as well. Anybody got their garden or containers going this summer season? What are you growing?
3 tomatoes, 3 cherry tomatoes, 2 bell peppers and 6 cucumbers. Everything is great other than the cucumbers. They got wrecked and are down to stubs. Unleashed a ton of ladybugs as defense and tried diatomaceous earth at first.
Harvested strawberries, lettuce and chard today. Badly need trellis for grapevines, they are growing into neighboring yard and strangle me when I walk through gate. Been nurturing six tomato seedlings, heirloom, ready to go into ground tomorrow. Also harvesting kale, bok choy and snap peas. Carrots and scallions. That's the back. Front is flowers. Profusion of color and shapes. I called front my right brain and back my left brain.
Been going to nursery after nursery lately. The yard is looking super nice. Bought some begonias and callillies today. Bought two pretty full purple/bue hydrangeas last week. I don’t know if I’m officially getting old or what but been taking a lot of pride in my yard lately. Helps when my grass is the greenest on the block thanks to Scott’s green max Going to plant vegetables next week
I live in 55+ community. A lot of my neighbors use same landscaping service, which means their yards all look basically alike. Mine jumps out. About ten roses, a lot of unusual ones like Dark Knight, deep purple, and Oranges and Lemons, yellow and orange stripes. Clusters of black eyed Susans. Poppies are over but still have irises and spikes of gladiolus opening. In back tall bamboo, salvia with small red flowers, flowering maple, azalea, jasmine. Nasturtiums and cosmos self seed so pop up all over. Took advantage of mint by moving clumps from back to front where they are spreading into ground cover. But oi my water bill!
Sprinkler in front yard on too high so I ran to turn it down. Tripped over giant cactus (it was a small cactus when I planted it but now extends over porch), landed hard on concrete, scraped both knees through my jeans, scraped my hand which is bleeding all over the place, and got soaked. Guess I should cut back cactus.
Planted a tomato, Zucchini, two different peppers, carrots just sprouting and peas are growing well. Just need to get a cherry tomato and cucumber. Will get them when I visit the valley this week. Oh yeah and a large bed of strawberries.
If you all would just dig down a little further when you garden, I could merge this thread with the rock bottom one.
Cats can't fly. I cut back cactus. I have heard a thousand times the risk of falls for old people but I guess just can't admit I am old. How did I get to be 70? I still walk five miles a day, lift weights, go to protests, dance to rock & roll, OK, very old rock & roll. I have all my teeth and most of my marbles.
Planted tomatoes. Save your eggshells and put them in when transplanting tomatoes, they like calcium. Bok choy and snap peas
I can empathize. “Boomers” is becoming less about population booms and more about the sounds we make when we fall.
My parents and sister in law's all have gardens with a wide variety so instead of doing the same the past couple years, we've only planted peppers, onion, and garlic. My son's name is Peter, so we use our bounty to make Peter's Peppers Hot Sauce and share with family and friends. It's worked out well since they share whatever they have extra of throughout the summer.
1 roma, 1 cherry and one.. regular tomato, strawberries and zucchini in pots for as soon as I finish this tomorrow: I keep trying to post a picture of my garden and keep getting a security error? @mods? @SlyPokerDog @Chris Craig , I know i’m on the watchlist, but damn….
Does the bamboo grow all over or is it easy to maintain? Sounds beautiful, I picture a very nice home with a wonderful garden and the delicious smell of cookies sitting on a windowsill, like a pie in comics. Oh no! Wishing you well Crandc! Better it than you!
Sounds delicious, what’s it consist of? Is it a thin sauce or more like a mash? I have made hot sauce with peppers I’ve grown before, Jalapeño and Habanero. I’m definitely a connoisseur of hot sauce.
