Because Simons also has 1 year left. He said they got off the 72 owed to Jrue in 26-27 and 27-28.
He shows 4 seasons of Jrue (3 going forward)
    To Portland Jrue Holiday: $30M, $32.4M, $34.8M, $37.2M (Player, 2027)

Jrue will not wear Blazers uniform. He will be traded to a win-now team in need of PG. We are compete now, not win now

Did he say how he came up with that?

BBREF says the Blazers have about 171M in scheduled payroll next season. The tax line is 188-189M. So, Portland is 17-18M below the tax. Jrue makes about 5M more than Simons. The 11th pick will be about 4.5M. So Portland would be 8-9M below the tax with 14 players

Taking back more than 110% of the salary sent out in a trade can trigger a hard cap.

1st apron is triggered if you make a trade taking in more than you send out. We'll see, per the Highkin post above, if this deal is expanded to avoid that, however.

This could save the day. This is the first report of the deal not being consummated until the new league year, which makes the 24-25 salaries moot for matching purposes as they will be using the 25-26 salaries, as well as any potential players and picks being added. This is why I kept saying if the Ant/Jrue trade is done, it sucks in m estimation. If it is still open to add, say, Sacramento, that could change the entire perspective of the deal. Hopefully another team is in need of an aging PG due $104.4 mil over three seasons. Fingers crossed.

KAT but it's close. I was dead set against Sabonis until this Jrue move. Now a player like one of those two makes sense.

ok...hard capped at the first apron. Blazers will be 17M below the 1st apron. But does anybody think Portland was going to pay tax next season>

Yeah, I wouldn't be worried about it at all. But, I suppose it is a limitation currently

Very unexpected....not trading Simons, but the return. Simons has a negative value? Jrue doesn't make sense. While he is one of the leagues best defenders and would not doubt help us there, he's too old and too expensive. He's basically going to retire after this contract. Also, when we traded for him in the Dame trade, he didn't want to come here and was very glad to be dealt to Boston. Suddenly, Boston decides to trade him back to us? And takes two picks, albeit seconds, to boot? Ugh.

There has to be more. I don't see this being done. More trades must be coming. The trade will likely be expanded or another one will come behind it quickly to relieve us from being hard capped. No way in hell we are paying taxes.

Best to Anfernee. Hope he does well in Boston. I see they are pivoting a bit with Tatum out next season.

    Correct

I didn't think they'd be trading for Jrue though either!

The thing about there being no way in hell that we're paying taxes is that it makes both aprons (hard caps) irrelevant because they're both over the tax threshold.

Feel like I've come full circle on this deal. Although I think I've done that with so many trades we've made. WTF to, ok, I can see it. I'd assume we're keeping him; if there was extra value, clearly Boston would have just gotten that. But who knows. His salary matching can get us to Sabonis, and Ant could not. But that seems really, really unlikely. Because then we have 5 Cs that can't play PF on the roster. I, again, feel like this is our "Houston" move to accelerate the growth of our youth by playing alongside competent vets

Yeah. There isn't much demand for a player like Simon's.

Those guys are a dime a dozen.

I think there will be another move that sends Deandre out... possibly with Matisse and pick 11 for a C that has shown they can be a number one scorer on a playoff team. I think I read a rumor that we were pursuing KAT last week... with the addition of Jrue and subtraction of Ant, KAT makes more sense.
