Guerrero, Angels pound Yankees in series opener

<h3>LA ANGELS 10, NY YANKEES 6</h3>BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheimrediscovered their offense at the expense of the New YorkYankees' beleaguered pitching staff.

Vladimir Guerrero and Casey Kotchman each had three hits and twoRBI as the Angels rolled to a 10-6 victory over the Yankees onFriday in the opener of a three-game series.

Anaheim was held scoreless for the third time this season in a12-0 loss at Detroit on Wednesday, managing just four singles.

But the Angels bounced back against the Yankees, tying a seasonhigh with 14 hits, including a season-high eight for extrabases.

Los Angeles did not trail after Guerrero hit an RBI double inthe first inning. He added an RBI single in a three-run fifthand doubled and scored in the sixth, when the Angels added fourmore runs for a 10-3 bulge.

Kotchman, who matched his career high in hits, blasted a solohomer in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth and made anumber of stellar defensive plays at first base. Light-hitting<div class="pre">Chone Figgins belted a two-run homer his first of the season.</div>

The offense supported a workmanlike performance from Anaheimstarter Jered Weaver (4-3), who threw 103 pitches in just fiveinnings. He won his third consecutive start, allowing threeruns, seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Alex Rodriguez hit his major league-leading 19th homer to startthe second inning but the Yankees stranded runners in each ofthe next four innings as Weaver continually worked out oftrouble.

Derek Jeter extended his hitting streak to 19 games and RobinsonCano hit a three-run double off Scot Shields in the eighth as arally fell short for the Yankees, who had won three of theirprevious four games.

New York climbed within 3-2 on an RBI single by DougMientkiewicz in the fourth inning, but manager Joe Torre decidedto remove rookie starter Tyler Clippard (1-1), who gave upthree runs and six hits his second career start, at the start ofthe fifth.

It proved to be an unwise move as the Yankees' bullpen imploded,allowing seven runs, five hits and six walks over the next twoinnings. Rookie Matt DeSalvo was charged with three runswithout recording an out and Luis Vizcaino yielded four runswhile retiring just three batters.

DeSalvo started the fifth by walking the first two batters hefaced, and Guerrero laced a single to right field to give theAngels a 4-2 lead. Gary Matthews Jr. followed with an RBIdouble to chase DeSalvo and Vizcaino issued a bases-loaded walkto Mike Napoli three batters later.

Vizcaino escaped further damage and Jorge Posada closed the gapwith an RBI double in the bottom half. But Anaheim's TommyMurphy opened the sixth with a single and Figgins drove a 2-0pitch over the wall in right-center field.

Vizcaino allowed the next two runners to reach base, andKotchman added an RBI single off Ron Villone with one out.Napoli hit a run-scoring base hit two batters later as theAngels finished one run shy of their highest-scoring game of theseason.
