He looks like a guy who’s trying to stay warm in a Bucks winter practice too

So that was the logic, but no other teams held that same logic?

Yeah, which made it flawed logic... if that were the case. I think Joe drafted Scoot to finish pushing Dame to ask out. I don't think Joe counted on the Miami or nothing drama but he made the most of it anyway.

I don't think I'll ever believe Joe's aw shucks routine completely but he made some shrewd moves and has set us up to where if Shaedon or Scoot can be an all star or both can be all stars and if Deni and Tou's best ball is in front of them, we'll likely make some decent playoff runs. If Yang ends up being an international superstar (taller and in shape Joker) then Joe should get some Executive of the Year awards. Don't get me wrong I think Joe is probably a nice guy, I just think he has a cut throat streak that only shows up in his moves and that he refuses to account for verbally.

You don't get to be a gm by not being cut throat.

Seriously. Joe probably brought everyone who worked at the PF in and got those complaints that got Olshey fired. And if Olshey was abusive which isn't hard to imagine at all since he was such a dick publicly, then again Joe did a shrewd but ultimately good thing for the team. I'm sure that's how he sees everything he's done so far and that's why he can genuinely get in front of the cameras and be the nice guy that he is. I don't think nice and shrewd have to be mutually exclusive.

I was pissed at him for obviously just making the best moves for the team without taking Dame into consideration but I was wrong and he was right. It was obviously the smart thing to do, especially given hindsight.

Then Joe is or at least surrounds himself with geniuses. Obviously it's a very long shot to think Yang will be that great but if he's even an all star at some point along with Shaedon and/or Scoot playing at that level then we should be a team that can get into the playoffs with HCA in the first round. If we get to that point then Joe deserves a lot of credit.

my only thought about this tonight is the hype around Yang is nuts

Clingan is a better C now; he'll be a better C next season. I'd imagine he'll be a better C 2 years from now, and 3 years from now

I think the Blazers can accommodate two slow-footed C's like this thru their rookie scale deals, but after they graduate to 2nd contracts Portland will have to choose one

Yeah, I still have the same mindset. His floor is still not being in the league after this first contract but I'm hoping for better for the guy and us.

Houston is paying 3 centers big contracts.

I mean Blazers probably cant afford max deals to both Clingan Yang in the 2030s.... don't we have plenty of years to worry about not being able to afford them both though?

Like literally these are the two players on the roster with the least possible concern of salaries.
Yang is locked into a cheap contract in 2028-2029 - the only Blazer to currently have a contract that season.

they are paying one C a big contract...Sengun; and Sengun has the type of mobility that Clingan and Yang don't have. And Sengun is an all-star

they are paying 32 year old Adams 13M/year. And 31 year old Capela 7M/year; that's 4.5% of the salary cap. If 23 year old Yang is worth less than 5% of the salary cap, he probably won't be worth keeping

and what was it I said? "when both graduate from their rookie-scale"....which is 4 years.

So Adams+Capela make 20 million a season, and Sengun is on a huge deal. Thats a lof of cash available at that center position. This is a team paying Durant a 35% supermax. Look at Gobert and Naz Reid - the center backup there is on a $125 million contract and Gobert has often been on a max. For awhile Minnesota also had a third center in Towns on a supermax too!

I just don't agree that there is any concern today about the Blazers having to eventually choose between Clingan or Yang when they finish rookie contracts. You said "Portland will have to choose one". I suppose in theory that might be possible - but it doesn't sound in the realm of being likely at all. There are plenty of ways one is just a role player. Or one is a good starter but at a Myles Turner/Reid level so again its not two max contracts. Or maybe one busts. Who knows.

I can only hope the players are both so dominant they're each getting near max deals!

How many players even have a tenure with the Blazers beyond 4 seasons?

Ant and Nurk were the only Blazers added after LaMarcus left that have played for the Blazers that long.

calm down...take a chill pill. I made some innocuous remark about the Blazers keeping both big plodding C's past 2029 and that set you off?

I was just riffing on two young C's who are pretty redundant in styles and body types, and that style has definite limitations in an evolving NBA. If Yang is only worth 5% of the cap; or even 10%, sure the Blazers can keep him. Not sure why unless they change the rules around the paint

Wiz CALM DOWN!!! Why are you so upset! WTF my gosh take a chill pill!

In serious... not sure why you'd think I wasn't calm.

I'm just pointing out that concerns of Yang/Clingan future contracts co-existing is a complete non issue. Literally can't find two players on the Blazers roster where this is less of an issue in the next 4 years.

Yes if Yang isn't worth a massive deal they can co-exist. I might actually think Clingan has the lower ceiling though. He has a high floor and was a positive player already last year, but I don't see how he will ever develop to a level much higher than that. I don't see any max player upside. Now Gobert got a max as a role player so who knows its possible. But I'm not sure you want to build a roster around Rudy Gobert type centers on max contracts.

If Yang became a Towns type with amazing offense he might be able to co-exist with Clingan - if Clingan is just a lesser paid role player.

But also if they both become starting level players perhaps the Blazers eventually trade one of them. That was also my point - we've had basically two players the last decade with a tenure over 4 seasons, its just not very likely any player is here for most of a decade. In that case it wouldn't be that the "Blazers had to choose one" .... it would be that it was more strategic to move forward with just one of them.
