Elon Musk should buy the Blazers, he could use his inventory of unsold Cyber Trucks to build the arena.
Yeah it does. There's a reason why Seattle has been rumored in the expansion game for a long time now, and it's not because they secretly want to screw Portland over and move the team. The Sonics (and Blazers) would have basically from Southern Oregon up to Alaska as their markets. Including Canada. They aren't going to pass up the $ that the teams will get from the expansion fees, in addition to the market they'd create in Vegas and return to in Seattle. The league has not washed off the stank from the Seattle/OKC screw job. Also, why would they fight to save the Kings, Clippers and Pelicans, but won't do anything to help a team here? Which makes more sense for the NBA. Teams in Seattle, Portland and Las Vegas, or just a team in Las Vegas? There's a few reasons why that analogy falls flat. For starters, the Oakland Coliseum was opened in *1967*. And both of the ownership groups of the teams that used it (Athletics and Raiders) are notoriously cheap. And much like the Chargers situation, it wasn't *new* owners coming in and moving those teams. It was ownership groups which (esp in the A's and Chargers) had alienated their fan base and purposely sabotaged their situations. There's a reason why the Thunder are the last NBA team to have a new ownership come in and move the team. It's not a good look for the league. The amount of money they'd lose out on isn't much when you calculate the 10 billion they'd receive from expansion fees.
I said this in another thread, but don't feel like bumping that one. I had the #'s off in this thread (regarding the Sonics being sold), but otherwise, it all works out.
Well I hope you’re right and I am completely wrong. would be devastating to me if we lose the team. Here’s to hoping that never happens. Let’s see who actually buys the team first, then we go from there
We really should implement a "gifting" option on BuyTheBlazers.com. I'll see about working on it. Thanks - Jon
I don't think the math is that simple, otherwise owners would be eager and in a hurry for expansion. They appear to be the opposite. Probably because this coming season is the first season of a 11-year/76B media rights deal. Owners want to spit their share 30 ways, not 32 ways, for a number of years. Then rake in those expansion fee's sometime in the mid-2030's there just doesn't appear to be any momentum for expansion right now
The amount that they "lose out" on with the 2 extra teams, is made up by the amount of the expansion fees split among the 30 teams. The only reason they are poo-pooing expansion now is to up the price of teams for sale now AND the amount of money the expansion teams have to pay. There is no logical reason why the NBA would want to move a team to Vegas at the expense of Portland and Seattle. It literally makes no sense.
It's simple - the NBA can make more money by leaving the Blazers in Portland. Plenty of franchises with worse revenue like the Pelicans or Hornets that can be moved if it comes to that. Not to say Portland and the Blazers community can sit back and do nothing. Eventually they'll probably need to help with an arena. I expect that will happen. Sacramento did that and kept the Kings. Seattle did not and lost the Sonics.
Expansion harms the worth of all existing NBA franchises. Do the one time fees make up for that? To some owners yes, to other owners no.
How on earth does the expansion harm the worth of existing NBA franchises? If that was the case, they'd never expand leagues.
it really doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense to you. What matters is the thinking of the 30 owners, and by all reporting there's no motivation to expand this decade no matter how much time you spend arguing the math.
Think of expansion as selling stock owners own in the NBA. Each owner needs to sell 5% and they get $300 million. Is that worth it? For some owners yes - but for others no.
Your only looking at one cost. After expansion owners would lose out on the subsequent TV deal, and one after that, and after that for decades or their lifetime or children's lifetime, etc. Maybe it'll end up costing many billions of dollars to owners. Especially so to more wealthy owners that recently bought a team or that are in big markets.
oh for the love of god...the new TV deals would be *bigger* because of the league being stronger/better markets.
