    Yeah I clicked on this thinking I was going to learn something new.
    Yes Portland travels further than any other team.
    Yes that has been the case for a long time.
    Yes the Northwest division is whack.

    Yes we have another thread somewhere that speaks of this.

    Expansion probably seems the best way to fix this. Certainly if Vegas and Seattle get teams.
    Another way they could fix it is to MOVE THE BLAZERS!

    So let's say they added the Vegas whatevers and the Seattle WeLoseOurTeamsALot.

    That means each conference would have 16 teams.

    So 15x4 = 60.

    They play the eastern conference now 32 times.

    That means they have 10 "extra" games.

    This creates weird issues with an even schedule.

    out of conference games (32). 16 teams = 32 games

    50 left. 50 doesn't easily go into 15 (the # of opponents).

    It's well above my pay grade.

    Obviously with the addition of two teams you either try to tweak the games to continue the 82 game schedule or go to 86 games which probably makes more sense.
    It gets Portland a way better schedule and travel if you add Vegas and Seattle. Drop Minny and OKC. No reason to lose Utah or the Nuggets plus probably add Sacramento.

    One thing that might be a sticking point is the league might not want Vegas in the Northwest division. They might want that in the division with the Lakers for Money reasons.

    We currently play the east twice. X15 = 30
    We play our division 4 games. X4 = 16
    We're guaranteed 3 games vs. west = 30
    we play 6 of those west teams randomly 4 times = 6

    Total of 82.

    Breakdown if we expand will likely depend on realignment, and if they eliminate divisions, or add 1 to make it 4 divisions of 4 teams.
    If so, best guess is

    east x16 = 32
    divison X4 = 12
    rest of west(12 teams) X3+36
    Random 2 west teams 1 extra = 2
    =82

    Yeah, won't be a realignment again until the next expansion. When the Sonics get added back and Vegas gets a team, there will be some shuffling. Grizzlies will head to eastern conference with OKC moving to SW division. Sonics will take their spot in NW division. The Timberwolves will also likely head east, meaning we get the Kings or Vegas in their place in the NW division.

    Alternatively, Grizzlies and Pelicans move east. Suns and Thunder move to SW. NW inherits Sonics Pacific inherits Vegas. Minn stays in western conference in the NW.

    Only need 1 team to move to the East to realign. We currently have 30, 15 and 15. If we add 2 to the west, it's 17 and 15. So only 1 moves. I have to imagine Minnesota makes the most sense. Even if Memphis is further east, they are at least close to N.O. and texas teams. Minny isn't close to anyone. Except the Central division

    So both conferences would have one division with six teams.

    Or both conferences create a fourth division and each division has four teams.

    That would end up being far more travel, unless they still kept the schedules the exact format, in which case, why eliminate.

    I think 4 4s is most likely. 2 8s would be cool too. Although really I'd prefer they just eliminate divisions all together.
