The thing with the 'Scholarship Fallacy' is that these parents think their D1 or D2 student is going to be getting a full ride like the football or basketball players and that simply isn't the case. Can't tell you how many parents are shocked to find out that even at the D1 level, every student isn't all on the school's dime and instead they are going to be getting just a fraction of it paid. Granted the athletes still have a lot of help at the college level, but it's also a full time job to be an athlete, on top of taking a full load of classes. I had a ton of respect for my friends that were playing football, volleyball and basketball while I was at WSU, seeing the time away from class and travel, on top of their daily routines. Parents spend tens of thousands of dollars for their kids to play from the ages of 8-18, only to see either no scholarship at all, or at best a partial and then Johnny/Susie flames out because of the rigor at school.

 

True. On the other hand, there are also scholarships available from NAIA programs and even D3 (though no sports scholarships at D3).

The best offer my daughter got was from a private D3 school (Lewis & Clark). It wasn't a sports based scholarship, but since she had good grades, took AP classes in HS and volunteered they are paying for virtually her whole education. And we feel coach helped grease the skids by directing her to some scholarships we wouldn't have known about and helped navigate the process from the inside. That was huge.

She had some D2 offers and we know players at the D1 level who she is as good or better than (though my daughter is short). But she couldn't be happier. She's having an absolutely incredible time.

We found the right fit school wise, as well as team wise and she's going to have almost no debt when she graduates with a $320k education.

It took some work. We had to reach out to coaches. Go to camps. And honestly, we could have hit more D1 and D2 camps. And of course she put in the work on the school side. But we really couldn't be happier.

 

Bro, as you know levels don’t mean anything when that student athlete finds the right fit and is happy. My man @bigbailes was talking about the D1 work load though and god damn….I don’t know how my kid does it. 6am til 10 pm 6 days a week basically.
Glad your kid went where she did, seems like she is loving it. And the scholarship thing is bananas. D1 women’s soccer had 15 full scholarships to give out, as does basketball…..but baseball has something like 11! So when you see most of those athletes out there, they are walking on or simply getting academic money.

Its a racket. Just tonight found out my 7th grade granddaughter will be going to CO, TX, & NV for faal ball tourneys. The expense is hard for families.
Reminds me of beauty pageants for young girls.

 

My nephew just got full ride offers from western Oregon and a couple Community colleges. I was kind of shocked that a community college would offer that.

 

Oregon Promise covers tuition for community colleges. It's awesome

 

No need to travel so far, IMO. If it's hard on families they can get a full ride just playing on the West Coast.

 

It IS a racket…..it’s a 1.7%er type of game. If you are one of the 1.7% who play a sport in HS and go on to get a D1 scholarship…..it’s tough telling those families that though. It was a proper good return on investment. I was surrounded by parents bitching about it being a scam and racket. Simply because they assumed their kid was headed to Team USA.

 

They prey on parents and kids feelings of being left behind and dangling that 'scholarship' in front of their face. My niece is going through it right now playing soccer for Columbia Premiere over in Vancouver as a 10 year old. They aren't doing the crazy travel yet but it's on the horizon.

 

It is SOLELY on the parents to be realistic in the situation. Plain and simple. You know if your kid is heading to play in college at a VERY early age and if it ain’t in the cards, it just ain’t. It can be devastating for these kids to be hyped up by their parents unto believe they deserve all this. Sad situation. We had to keep all of my daughter’s recruiting situation to ourselves. She/we didn’t want the other girls to feel bad about their situation. It is cut throat the older they get. Wishing your niece the best bro. If it ain’t a for sure thing, they should just play with their neighborhood team and enjoy it.

 

Imagine if you had been “discovered” for your video game prowess? Did I use that last word correctly? I had never said or typed that before?
