I hope the Red Sox did that, cause that's worse that siging Beckett.

Wtf... 51.1 million just for bidding rights? You could buy a whole new Japanese team.Knowing Boras, he'd ask for a $50 million contract too citing the fact the BoSox were willing to shovel out 51.1 million just to talk to him. If the BoSox can't sign him, Boras would hold a grudge against the BoSox and insult the country, and then Matsuzaka wouldn't negotiate with them next year.I don't think Matsuzaka will be pitching in the majors this year. No way he'll take a bargain deal. 2 years $25 million at the minimum I see him making if he does come into the big leagues.

Offering 30 milion to talk to Matsuzaka would have been too much, offering 51.1 million is downright rediculous. I see them offering around a 5/60 deal for his services and Boras will probably try and talk them down to a 3/39 deal so that Boras can get Matsuzaka at Free Agency still in his 20's. This is probably singlehandedly going to be the most reckless move in MLB History (More-So then A-Rods contract) as by the time the Posting Fee and Matsuzakas contract are both paid, Boston is going to average somewhere in between 20 and 30 million a year for somebody who has never pitched in the Major Leagues.

It's amazing how quick you guys change your mind.I don't see why everyone is freaking out over it. If you have the money to spend, and it doesn't really effect anything.. why not do it?

Nobody is worth that price.

Investing $80-100 million, including $50 million upfront is a downright huge investment. In fact, if Boston signed Matsuzaka for 3 years 39 million... $90.1 million for 3 years. That would be $30 million a year for Matsuzaka. 4.2 million more than A-Rod made last year. The sensible deal would be 5 years 60 million but still $110 million for 5 years? $22 million for a pitcher that hasn't throw a pitch in the majors? Tying Hall of Famer Roger Clemens 1 year contract last year. 3 more than Mussina. 4.5 more than Pettite. 6 million more than Pedro. The top pitchers (Johan, Halladay, Webb, Sheets, Dontrelle) don't even make close to that much. Johan 4 for 40, Halladay 3 for 40, NL Cy Young Winner Webb 5 for 28 Sheets 4 for 38.5 Dontrelle 1 for 6 (arbitration). These are established pitchers.See how ridiculous that is? Already, the Red Sox are investing $10+ per year no matter how long or small his deal is. More than likely they'll invest at least 15 million if not at least $20 million per year.Unless Matsuzaka posts a 30 game, 30 win, 0 ERA, 0 hits, 0 BBs, a couple perfect games, and at least 15 complete game season and wins every single post season game for the Red Sox via complete game... no pitcher is worth $20+ million.Talk about throwing money down the drain. Maybe Bostonians learned how to grow money on trees...

In 3 years, Dontrelle Willis will be making at least 15 million a year from somebody. It's just the way things work in baseball.

The 51.1M goes to his Japan club, and it doesn't get counted on Boston's payroll or factored into luxury tax calculations.

If my team was set to shell out 100 mil over for years/90 mil over 3 years for Matsuzaka I'd be pissed, yeah. Because we could buy 2 quality starting pitchers and a role player or two for that amount.Even if Matsuzaka wins like Johan Santana (I doubt it, but hey) then the Red Sox still have to find a way to win some of those games in between his starts with guys who are over the hill (Cut Schilling) or have a 5 run ERA (Josh Beckett) or are new to the rotation (Paplebon [sp?]).Essentially what would you rather have, 1 25 game winner or 2 18 game winners, a quality mid-reliever, and a pinch hitter.
