IMO there is no effing way they actually sign him. Scott Boras has said that Matsuzaka will not sign a deal longer than 3 years, meaning even if the Red Sox get him on the cheap at 10 mil a year, that's still 81.1 mil for 3 years of work.... or 27 mil a year. If Boras got his asking price, Matsuzaka will sign a 3-year, 37.5 million dollar contrat. Which means the Red Sox will essentially be paying 30 million a year over 3 years in order to have Matsuzaka on their roster.IMO there is no way they sign him, this must be a move to keep others *cough*Yankees*cough* from getting him this year. Because the way the system works, if the Red Sox don't sign him then he just goes back to Japan for another year and re-enters the same process next year.<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>NAPLES, Fla. ? To neatly summarize baseball's new era: The Boston Red Sox are willing to pay $51.1 million merely for the right to negotiate with Scott Boras.Such talks have, in the past, made fools of rich men, turned dark hair gray and sent systolic and diastolic pressures to unhealthy levels. And yet here are the Red Sox, coveting Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka enough that they might just be breaking a commandment, and steeling for discussions that, if successful, will end with them shelling out another $12.5 million or so a year to actually get the right-hander in uniform. If Boston does work out a contract with Matsuzaka over the next 30 days ? Boras will push for three years to get Matsuzaka back on the free-agent market before he turns 30, and the Red Sox will pull for four or five years to get the full value of the posting fee they pay the Seibu Lions ? he becomes the new Alex Rodriguez.</div>The Story Here

They're pretty much going to have to sign him with the media pressure, Boras, and the pressure from MLB and Seibu. Not to mention that if they were attempting to block a team like the Yankees from winning and they didn't negotiate in good faith with Matsuzaka the Commisioner has the right to move the bidding rights over to the Second Highest Team (Which is reportably the Mets with a 38 million bid, although for that much, I hope this doesn't happen.... )In the end, he is going to be rediculously overpriced though.

^Would you be saying that if the Yankees won the bidding for 51.1 mil? I personally doubt it.

As for the Carl Pavano comparisions they are just rediculous. Carl Pavano was a Injury-Prone One-Year Wonder who had a Terrific 2004 in his contract year in the midst of a otherwise extremely mediocre and injury plagued career. Despite having that 18-8 season he still had a losing career record and he has only pitched over 200 innings twice in his Major-League career so im not getting where you think he had lots of innings on his arm. Matsuzaka has been consistantly great in Japan Ball, posting an ERA under 3 for the past 4 consecutive seasons. Has 200 or more strikeouts for 3 of the past 4 seasons, a great K:BB ration every single year, and has had a spectacular career in Japan year in and year out. He has only had one injury in his history and that was in 2002, so he has gone the past 4 seasons injury free. Yes he has thrown alot of innings, but it hasnt hurt him yet. I would think he will probably break-down early ala Pedro Martinez, but that wont be for at least another 5 years at least.
