Faced with a 4th and inches against the Rams, Mike Nolan opted to go for the field goal while leading 17-13, giving the Rams a chance to take the lead with a go-ahead touchdown. The win probability calculations seem to accent the fact that Mike Nolan was far too conservative in sending out the field goal unit. Are coaches being to conservative on 4th down, sending the special teams units out there? I mean, I can understand the battle for field position, but I wish more coaches would step up and go for it on 4th down and use win probability.http://www.protrade.com/content/Disp...2-8941454a02f9The link above will take you to an article in which the win prob of the aforementioned play is described.

<u>STOP POSTING YOUR TOPICS IN 2 OR 3 DIFFERENT PLACES!</u> [IMG] This site is small enough to where it will be seen, it doesn't need to be posted in multiple places.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Brooksie5 @ Nov 28 2006, 07:40 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>But it responds to people and stuff...</div>It's a person im pretty sure, but it's annoying. I deleated all the duplicate topics earlier since there was no need for it. Back on topic though, If I saw the game id give some thoughts about the 4th down in question, but theres alot of variables im not sure on so I wouldn't comment. 4th and What? Were they running well, passing well? How much time left? So on and so forth make it impossible to give any real feedback without seeing the game.

They drove down the whole field. I dont think Nolan made the wrong call on 4th down, kicking the field goal, but he made the wrong call on 3rd down, which is getting completely overlooked. The 49ers drove from the 20 yard line or so, using up 7-8 minutes of clock, running it very well, 11 rush and 1 pass the entire drive, so, just by judging it like that, they shouldve gone for it on 4th down, but 9ers have been real bad on short yardage situations all year. On 3rd down and inches, instead of giving it to Frank Gore, who had been running all over the Rams defense all day, he gives it to the rookie athlete Michael Robinson, who doesnt get it. That, IMO, was the dumbest call. I completely agreed with him kicking the field goal 4th down. It forced the Rams to have to drive down the field and score a touchdown, something they had not done all game. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened. But, I do agree with Nolan's call on 4th down, but definately not his call on 3rd down.I hope that made sense for all of you, it's real late...
