(Dec. 10, 2006) -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme was inactive for the game against the New York Giants with an injured thumb on his throwing hand, giving Chris Weinke his first start in more than four years.Delhomme suffered ligament damage in his right thumb when his hand hit Philadelphia defensive tackle Darwin Walker 's helmet on his 9-yard touchdown pass to Steve Smith in the first quarter of Monday's loss to the Eagles.Delhomme continued to play in that game, but he did not practice all week.Weinke, the former Heisman Trophy winner from Florida State, hasn't been Carolina's full-time starter since their 1-15 season in 2001. Undrafted rookie Brett Basanez, signed off the practice squad, was Weinke's backup.</div>http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/CAR/9862903
