    I was wondering what that thing is the officals throw on the field whenever there is a fumble and why they throw that??

    So they know what yard line the fumble was at.

    Wherever the ball is marked by that is from punt returns, turnovers, or basically any change of posession in the game. I think it is just a slab of rubber or something.
