<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Even though he was named the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year and led the New York Jets to a surprising playoff berth, Chad Pennington will have to start at square one in 2007 for coach Eric Mangini.Chad PenningtonQuarterbackNew York JetsProfile2006 SEASON STATISTICSAtt Comp Yds TD Int Rat485 313 3180 17 16 82.6"I think Chad did a great job," Mangini said. "Like with every position, we're going to evaluate it as we go. But I really believe in Chad. I just think as a core philosophy, that's what we believe in. In terms of competition, this is no statement one way or the other, but I believe in competition."And that's OK with Pennington."One thing I have learned over the past seven years is that you are not guaranteed anything in this league," Pennington said. "No matter what has happened in the past, it does not guarantee a future. What I am guaranteed is another opportunity to show what I can do and to lead this team. I feel confident in that."Pennington was the face of the franchise, but was coming off a second consecutive shoulder operation. Mangini pushed him to earn the job in a four-way competition. The veteran quarterback responded by playing in all 16 games for the first time in his career and threw for over 3,000 yards for the second time."When we head into the next season, we start over at 0-0," Mangini said. "I really believe that. I think this season's in the books. Where we finished is really no indication of what's going to happen next year."Pennington's primary competition likely will be 2006 second-round pick Kellen Clemens, who saw limited action this season.</div>http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2725186Expected, but Thank God.
Not a huge surprise, and a good idea. I'd rather him earn it, because Clemens is going to take the job at some point.
I hope Clemens wins the job. Pennington had a great season, but he is killing us in the passing game more than he is helping.

i love Penny, but bottomline, hes 30 now (im pretty sure) and we need to think about franchise QB. This past season was a lot of luck, based on schedule. Dont expect him to lead us to this successful of a season with a harder schedule next year. I think inserting Clemens might be rash, but having another QB Battle in camp is probably a good idea.
30 is still a QB near his prime. Sure, they can't scramble, but Chad never could. The future of a team does not need to start in only his 2nd year, but it's possible he won't get a chance until his 4th season. Would you rather have your team be built up and look good with a new QB coming in, or would you rather start off with a shaky offense that needs to calm out for a few seasons?

Not to mention that except in rare cases, a QB has to work out the rookie jitters in an NFL Game, regardless of how much time they sit on the bench. Either way though, they should start whoever looks better in training camp. Let Clemens earn it.
All I'm saying, is that Pennington will probably win it and will probably be better for the team in the short term. When he hits 32, I see him dropping to Clemens as starter. By that time, Chad will be a good mentor to him and will probably stick around the Jets organization despite being a backup. Clemens would be better off having the entire offense down pat, practicing with the 1st team offense more and more, and then when it comes time, he will be more equipped to succeed.

You are generalizing his season. He was awful in more games than he was good and is not consistent. He is not a super bowl winning quarterback.

I don't think you know how to evaluate talent or experience. If you think Clemens is going to come in and magically be any better than Chad, then you are an idiot.
