Give Coughlin an extension so that this next year isn't seen as a "lame-duck year" for him, and give him that one last year to pull out all the stops. When and if he fails, Cowher's year off is complete, and the Giants are ready to make him an offer. It's not like there are a ton of great head coaching prospects this year. The crop was picked pretty clean on new coaches last year.

I think I said that... oh right, I did already.
the extension was so that we actually had a shot at landing a halfway decent set of assistant coaches. See, when head coaches go so do assistant coaches, and had we not given Coughlin an extension, then none of the prospective assistants wouldve wanted to work with us, being as they'd most likely be out the door after this season when Coughlin's contract was up. At least now, if they and Coughlin do a good job, they have a shot to be here next year as well.
