I am still on board the Jose Reyes train, so don't think that I am jumping on the Ramirez ship yet, but, hey, the guy did win ROY last year and let's compare his stats with Jose Reyes' this year.Ramirez: .332 batting average, .388 on-base percentage, .545 slugging percentage, 15 home runs, 39 RBIs, 72 runs, 27 stolen bases, 45 extra-base hits and a minus-8 fielding runs above average.Reyes: .308 batting average, .387 on-base percentage, .450 slugging percentage, six home runs, 38 RBIs, 64 runs, 46 stolen bases, 33 extra-base hits and a plus-1 FRAAI bolded the categories in which the player leads in. Now, of course Reyes leads the stolen base category, but its not like Ramirez isnt quick, its not like he hasnt stolen a base, he has stolen almost 30, and will probably reach 50 by the seasons end, and if he keeps progressing like this, we could see a 30/30 out of him one day. I don't know if Reyes will hit 30 home runs, I think he can, but that's not his purpose, his purpose is to get on base. It's just an interesting conversation to have I guess.
Reyes doesn't have 30 HR potential. Just because he had one small power surge last year people think he's fucking Barry Bonds (yes, I exaggerated). I think Hanley will be the best shortstop soon enough, but he won't be recognized until he's out of Florida.
i donno, i think reyes certainly has some power, and playing at Shea certainly helps, he could definately get to 30hrs if he tried to hit home runs. the thing is, he's not trying to hit a home run when he steps up to the plate.
Hanley is a great player. I really don't want to tear apart his game as he is one of the best young Shortstops in the game (And I've been saying that it should have been a crime that he didn't make the All-Star Game). I will say a few things however though is that your line of stats makes the debate look alot more lopsided then it actually is though, IMO. Reyes this season had an MVP-level month of April, but in the 3 months since he's been in a bit of a funk Offensively. He's still hitting for average (For the most part) but he wasn't hitting for much power until he got 2 Home Runs this recent week. So you're probably comparing Hanley at his best to an Off Season from Reyes. Also, Hanley hit 3rd in the order for almost Half of the Season (so far) now so you would expect him to be better in categories like RBI's then a Leadoff hitter like Reyes. To think that Reyes is only 1 RBI shy is pretty amazing....then again, it's probably more of a testament to how bad Hanley was hitting 3rd in the lineup (At least bad in comparison to Hanley in the leadoff spot). Other categories like Runs Reyes is historically better then where he is right now, and the lack of production the Mets have gotten from their middle of the lineup (Mainly Beltran and Delgado) is one of the main reasons that his Runs Scored is down, but it is really to no fault of Reyes that the guys in the middle of the order failed to bring him in. And Where did you get that his Defense his better? Hanley has 16 Errors (Tied for 3rd Worst) compared to Reyes' 7 (Tied for 5th Best)Hanley's Zone Rating is 3rd Worst in the League, Reyes's is Second Best.Hanley is one of the Bigger Defensive Liabilities in the game right now. But Reyes on the other hand will probably have multiple Gold Gloves by the time his career is over (Once Vizquel retires, or moves back to the AL, that is).<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Reyes doesn't have 30 HR potential. (And I'm not sure how you can label it a surge when 8 came before the ASB and 11 Came after the ASB, he was fairly consistant throughout.)Overall I think Hanley is having the better year, but I'm far from convinced that he will be a better player. Either way you can't go wrong having a young stud like Ramirez or Reyes on your team.
