(July 31, 2007) -- Frank Gore, the San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl running back, broke a bone in his right hand during the first padded practice of training camp and might not play in the preseason.Gore was injured during a non-contact ball-handling drill, and coach Mike Nolan said he would not practice with the team for the remainder of the week. Gore will be re-evaluated Aug. 6, and Nolan expects him to return to practice then with a cast on his hand."He'll be ready for the latter part of preseason, but his participating in the preseason, we'll wait and see on that," Nolan said.Gore set a franchise single-season record last season while leading the NFC with 1,695 yards rushing. He was the NFC's starting running back in the Pro Bowl after just his second NFL season. One of the league's top young backs, Gore said he is aiming for a 2,000-yard season this year and hopes to challenge Eric Dickerson's NFL record of 2,105 yards that has stood for 22 seasons.Gore has a considerable history of serious injury. He tore ligaments in each of his knees and had major surgery on both during his college career at Miami. After his first season with the 49ers in 2005, when he became the first rookie in 15 years to lead the team in rushing, Gore had surgery to repair a torn labrum in each of his shoulders. That didn't prevent Gore from having a breakout season last year, when he also recorded a franchise-record 312 carries. He also led San Francisco last year with 61 receptions while setting a franchise record of 2,180 yards from scrimmage. The 49ers intend to lighten Gore's load this year, and there's a three-way competition in training camp for backup carries behind him between young veterans Maurice Hicks and Michael Robinson and rookie Thomas Clayton, the team's sixth-round selection in the April draft."I always like to see a silver lining in whatever happens," Nolan said. "This is going to give Michael Robinson, Hicks and the rookie an opportunity to get more reps and see what they can do."Nolan said there's a possibility the 49ers will bring in another running back to provide depth in training camp until Gore returns. Robinson, Hicks and Clayton are the only other running backs on the team's summer roster.</div>

Me?Well anyways, this is a blessin in disguise. Atleast now Gore wont go down with a serious injury in the preseason and now the fight to be the #2 and #3 between Robinson, Hicks, and Clayton will be easier to figure out since they will be put under a microscope since Gore will not play at all in the games.

I can't agree that an injury is a blessing in disguise. Injuries suck no matter what angle you look at it. With some players they just start to go downhill after the first one.

[IMG] And yes it is, it'll heal and the back-ups will actually get enough reps for the Niners to figure out who will be the #2 and #3 backs and which will get cut. Robinson and Clayton could definitely use all the reps too since one is in his 2nd year (In a pretty new position) and Clayton is a rookie. LT doesnt play at all in the preseason so Im glad the same will be for Gore, even if it is a fractured bone in his hand. Just glad it wasnt an injury to his legs or knees, especially a serious one.

Wont be easy for him to hold onto the ball, catch, take handoffs, etc.. for quite a bitI'm sure he will be fine too but its definitely not a blessing in disguise.

But once it comes off it'll be like any other fracture, like normal once it had enough time to heal like he will have. Oh well as a Niner fan I think it is, better a minor one now than a major one in a preseason game. And even better, he will be ready for the season opener.

You're so biased it's disgusting. I don't care if Steven Jackson like stubs a toe.. it's obviously not going to be a "blessing in disguise." It's a fucking injury. Just get over it, Gore is injury prone like none other (and I'm a big Frank Gore fan).

Well, the good news is it doesn't sound like it's going to affect his season. But yeah, not a blessing in disguise. If it's not completely healed by the season he could be prone to Fumbles, catching the ball, as his Grip won't be as it once was. We'll see.

Just get over it, Gore is injury prone like none other (and I'm a big Frank Gore fan).</div>Oh shut up.<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Running back Frank Gore has a broken finger in his right hand and is expected to be out of practice for at least a couple of weeks. However, he wasn't happy with the decision to be sidelined. "I told him this is going to be a blessing in disguise," McCloughan said. "You don't need to take any shots in practice. We'll get you in the last preseason game and get you ready for Arizona. He started crying, 'I need to practice. I need to be part of the team.' You love him to death and he's sincere. It kills him to not be out there." A lot of that is based on the fact that Gore injured both knees while at the University of Miami, once losing his job to Willis McGahee. As a result, Gore continues to worry about his status despite the fact that the 49ers gave him a new contract in the offseason. The team guaranteed Gore, who led the NFC in rushing last year in just his second season, $14 million in the process. Shortly after rewarding Gore with a new deal, the team drafted fellow back Thomas Clayton in the sixth round. The franchise was very delicate in its handling of the situation. "I told (Gore) before the draft, 'Look, we're going to draft a running back in the sixth round.' I called him two days after the draft and said, 'You're p**sed, right?'" McCloughan recalls. "He said, 'Yeah, I don't really want to talk to you.' He thinks we're drafting somebody to replace him. If he's not out here practicing with the team, he thinks somebody is getting better and is going to take his job."</div>Frank "The Fuckin Tank" Gore [IMG]
